Cant install driver update bundles to 4.1

More 4.1 fun.

I tried to upgrade one of my existing 4.0U2 hosts by wiping it and doing a fresh install.

The install went fine but, when I try to install the drivers for my 10 Gig card it give an error.

I am trying to install the offline driver bundle for an Emulex OneConnect OCe10102-N (HP550SFP) with esxupdate:

-

@esx4 tmp]# esxupdate --bundle=sve-be2net-2.101.386.0-offline_bundle-222638.zip update

Encountered error NoMatchError:

The error data is:

Id -

Message - No bulletins for this platform could be found. Nothing to do.

Errno - 13

Description - No matching bulletin or VIB was found in the metadata.

When I check the Hardware Compatibility Table for this card it shows:

I have tried both downloads listed for 4.1. Both produce the same error with esxupdate.

I tried the same downloads that worked for 4.0 U2 with the same error.

This same card and host was working well in 4.0U2.

When I try to import it into Update Manager 4.1 by opening the ISO and pointing it to the offline-bundle I get:

Upload offline patches VCENTER.mirabito.com

Cannot find patch metadata. You can try to re-download the patches, or ensure that the network connectivity and DNS between VMware

vCenter Update Manager and the host are setup correctly. Check host agent, vpxa and esxupdate logs for details. If you are importing a

bundle, make sure it is valid.

This feels more like 4.1 RC1

I am having the exact same problem. I opened up a support ticket with VMware and they had to escalate to the second level. I have not heard back from them yet. Please let me know if you have any updates.

I was able to work around this issue by wiping the server and installing 4.0, installing the custom drivers, and then upgrading to 4.1.

I am in the process of stress testing this configuration before I call it fit for production, but the early results are positive.

Hope this helps you.

Looks like you already found a workaround. I had the same problem with my Emulex 10 Gb cards (IBM p/n 49Y4201) in an IBM x3850 X5. I poked around in the "sve-be2net-2.101.386.0-offline_bundle-222638.zip" file and noticed the vmware.xml file inside the metadata.zip file had ESX version hardcoded to 4.0 and 4.0.0. I changed all these occurances to 4.* and was able to successfully install the driver using the esxupdate command.

I tried that at first as well, but I received an error that the signatures did not match after I updated the xml files.

Maybe I edited too much....

Either way, installing the drivers in 4.0 and upgrading to 4.1 seems to work as well.

I've encountered the same issue trying to install drivers for Intel 82580EB quad port NIC (i340) on ESXi 4.1.

The solution was removing vSphere CLI 4.0 and installing version 4.1 instead.
