When trying to install ESXi 4.1 I get the following... Any ideas?
vmkctl.HostCtlException: Unable to load module /usr/lib/vmware/vmkmod/vmfs3: Failure
Do you have any storage available for installation? Local or SAN?
Yes. This blade previously had ESX 4.0U2 successfully installed on it on Local Disk
Yes installing on local disk (Rebuilding on a system that had ESX 4.0 U2 successfully installed previously. Also ESXi 4.0 U2 was previously installed on the same hardware, but couldn't be used due to the 10GigE cards that required the driver cd.
Hey there,
Had the exact same error on installing VMware esxi 4.1 installable CD
Tried version 4.0 esxi Free and it came up with a graphical error saying "no compatible network adapters found" instead of command line crash failure (my output was identical to yours on 4.1 install).
Used the compatibility guide and found an Intel e1000 NIC that works, installed it into the Server and booted to the 4.1 install Disc again. This time no crash and worked perfectly, instead of the crash it asked me where to install and picked up my RAID storage.
Onboard NIC won't make the cut for some mainboards.
Hope this helps.
Hi,
Could you please provide more detail to install the specific driver? Booting on the ESXi 4.1 installer, you do not have options to provide specific drivers, do you?
Thanks by advance.
Refer to:
http://communities.vmware.com/message/1579296#1579296
This has the step by step process for the custom install.
Note: If shared storage is available, then after the first customisation you should be able to place the drivers onto the shared storage and then access from there.
Regards,
Jonathan
Just to let you know my experience with installing ESXi 4.1 on unsupported hardware.
Motherboard: ASUS P5Q-E (a standard desktop motherboard, not supported by VMWare).
I had the same error mentioned above.
Installed an Intel Pro 1000 GT Network card (about £20 in UK);
Went into BIOS, disabled the two Marvel onboard NICs (and the firewire for good measure);
ESXi then installed fine.
As an aside, I also found that using an IDE CD-Rom Drive for the install caused issues but this was solved by using a SATA one instead.
Many Thanks adamu for the suggestion to change the NIC.
You might want to add your experience to the Community supported hardware list. http://communities.vmware.com/cshwsw.jspa If it isn't already on the list http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/esx40_whitebox_HCL.php as well.
