Tried to create a linux liveCD with vmware installed to use as a host. But the instructions were broken.
1. Where are some reliable instructions for making my own linux liveCD with vmware workstation installed - nothing fancy, just a vmware supported linux distro plus vmware workstation?
2. Would ESX Server be faster than a linux liveCD once boot-up is complete? Note I do NOT play games. But I do play flash movies on youtube. On both linux and windows VMs. Will they play jerky on ESX?
Do you know my site ? I create portable systems that run Workstation - the project is called MOA
I have LiveCDs with Workstation based on Windows - and USB-devices that run Workstation based on Linux or Windows.
Linux LiveCDs with Workstation have poor performance compared with Windows based ones.
Using Linux only makes sense on 64 bit Hosts - on 32 bit hosts Windows LiveCDs outperform Linux based ones by a wide margin.
On my site you find a ready to use older Slax with Workstation 6.0.2 - but it performs poor because all 32 bit Linux must use a mainmem-file which is not necessary on Windows and Linux 64 (using Workstation 7)
Forget ESX - it can not replace a regular host - you will always need a second machine to use it

Here is a screenshot of the bootscreen of a portable USB-disk
the option you may want is selected

This portable USB-disk is exactly what I need then. I began a while ago to follow your instructions for building a MOA CD but was put off by the many features and (perceived) complexity of the instructions, it seemed a long shot at the time. I guess it is the best option now.
Maybe you have done this already, but have you tried creating a super-simple version of the USB-disk image creation instructions where its creation is nearly 100% automatic? That would drastically increase the numbers of people using your work.
By the way, do you make money out of that site? If not, have you considered google adsense?
Hi

Yes - it has lots of features - as I mostly do this just for myself I never thought about simplifying it. Also the Linux option only started to make sense after WS 7 was released so that part is quite new.
You think I should make a pure WS 7 USB-disk without all the bells and whistles ?
Good idea

I have google adsense on sanbarrow.com but nowadays with most folks using addblockers the results are very poor - almost useless.
I get about one donation every 3 months - so all in all it is mostly work for nothing
It is a good month when it pays for the hosting costs

Definitely.
You once said your MOA liveCD using windows XP is faster than a regular hard disk install, or something like that. Would the same apply to the WS 7 USB-disk using 64-bit linux?

sorry - I don't know - I do not use regular installed Linux. All my systems run either MOA based on BartPE or ESXi

check this out:
http://sanbarrow.com/moa64setup.html
thats simplified instructions to get MOA 64 only - you still have to install Workstation 7.1 RC yourself
