I have an HP DL 140 G3 with 2 SATA drives. I also purchased an HP DL 120 G6 with SATA drives.
I am able to get VMware ESXi 4 installed just fine. However, it completely ignores the RAID setup I configure in the BIOS. Is there a workaround for this? Are there any drivers available? I also tried the HP customized version of ESXi 4 with no luck.
Any help would be appreciated.
Embedded controllers are very seldom hardware raid devices and require software to run in the OS. You would need a p200 / p400 series raid controller. It is possible this is a version of the controller that requires an optional RAM / Battery module to function as a hardware RAID controller.
Do not use the HP version of the ESXi installer. The HP version is strictly for supported hardware. The 120 does not qualify on the Hardware Compatibility List.
Without a Hardware RAID device you will only get individual drives and there is no work around.
HP says that the p200 is retired.
I was referring to the p200 p400 SERIES. The 140 g3 would have had an available 200 or 400 series controller as well. The most current 200 series is 212 and 412. I would order up a 212 and the RAM/Battery option. Performance without a real RAID controller (and write caching) will be less than ideal.
Thanks for the correction. I'll look into it.
Hi,
officially, to get working a RAID with esxi 4.0 the controller must be one from this:
RAID controllers – Dell PERC (Adaptec RAID or LSI MegaRAID), HP Smart Array RAID, or IBM (Adaptec) ServeRAID controllers.
Officially, to support SATA drives the controllers must be:
SATA disk drives – SATA disk drives connected behind supported SAS controllers or supported on-board SATA controllers.
Supported SAS controllers include:
LSI1068E (LSISAS3442E)
LSI1068 (SAS 5)
IBM ServeRAID 8K SAS controller
Smart Array P400/256 controller
Dell PERC 5.0.1 controller
Supported on-board SATA include:
Intel ICH9
Nvidia MCP55
ServerWorks HT1000
But you can check this pretty good community hcl, too:
Un saludo/Regards,
Pablo
