Hi,
I've recently encountered a problem that is not rectified by any of the usual fixes. I cannot launch VMs because /dev/vmmon is missing. The symptom began after updating my kernel to 2.6.27.39. The problem went away for the duration of one boot when I upgraded from Workstation 6.5.2 to 6.5.3.
I'm at a loss how to proceed. Can anybody suggest diagnostic or corrective procedures?

Based on this thread I executed this mknod:
mknod /dev/vmmon c 10 165
after which I could launch my VM as usual.
The question remains why /dev/vmmon was removed and / or why it's not created when the vmware service is started (and attendendent kerne modules are loaded).
Any hints or clues or suggestions?

No one can offer any insight into this problem?
No can offer any insight on this problem?
I am having the same problem, not sure why.
I will try the solution you posted next time I reboot. Ubuntu 9.10 64bit, latest Kernel.
