Limitations of running ESX as VM in ESX? posted: Dec 10, 2009 6:18 PM

I know that performance will be an issue, but what are the other known limitations?

Will I be able to run 64-bit VMs inside of ESX that is running as a VM? I want to test vDR in my lab and I cannot do this with ESX VMs inside of Workstation 7.

From what I have read, FT can work in this setup with some config file editing?

I am trying to figure out if I I should purchase a physical lab ( 2 x ML-115 G5s) for 2 ESX servers to perform all functions or if I could get a ML-330, load it up with memory and perform all feature testing in a single box (for ESX running as a VM inb ESX). While the ML-115 is a decent option, it starts getting expensive when you add in Quad nics and physically connecting them with a switch.

Thanks,

as stated, you inner VM's can only be 32bit

you may want to look at some cheaper hardware and install ESX that way. Therefore you can run x64 guests.

Hello,

ESX on ESX or Workstation is a very good way to perhaps debug kernels, or to run 'demos' of software on laptops, etc. However, IMHO, you should not run tests of your production environment in anything less than the machines you use for your production environment. I have seen quite a few issues where the test env was different enough to cause bizarre or incorrect behavior within the production environment.

Yes I use ESX within Workstation, but its different enough that I do not use it to 'test' my prod environment, but I use it to demo code, etc. At the moment ESX within workstation is a great training, development, demo tool, etc. but not necessarily for production testing.
