Guest type and Cannot configure the source image errors posted: Oct 21, 2009 5:27 PM

When creating a VM using a CentOS ISO the system creates the VM OK. During import to ESX 3.5 I get several errors with "Cannot configure the source image". Then after importing it does not recognize the guest OS type and have to manually change it to be Other Linux 32 bit (it is a CentOS 5.3. Is this a bug or something missing in the configuration?

Does this VM created by VMware Studio 2.0 GA build?

During import to ESX 3.5 I get several errors with "Cannot configure the source image".

I think you are getting this error while using VMware Converter. This is just a warning message and appearing while using VMware Converter 3.5. You will not get this error message if you use VMware Converter 4.0. You can ignore this because after ignoring this warning, we can able to import the image successfully.

I think this is not a bug. I observed that in VI client 2.5 and 4.0 CentOS is not there in Guest Operating System version list. So I guess this is because of VI client limitation.

Using Vmware Studio 2.0, we definitely specify the OS as CentOS v5.3. The generated OVF files (version 0.9 & 1.0) show CentOS v5.3 however when we import the the OVF file into an ESX 4 server, it will not display the OS correctly. It shows "Other Linux" in ESX 3.5 and "Red Hat Linux" in ESX 4. Shouldn't it show "CentOS v5.3" for at least the ESX 4 OVF import?

There are a set of OS names internal to the ESX product (for instance try creating a new VM using vSphere Client and specify the OS for it), some of the OSes are not present in this list Ex: Centos 5.3. As a result this OS name is mapped to the closest available OS name in that list.

Newer releases of ESX will probably have Centos 5.3 listed.
