VMware Workstation 7.0.0.203739
I had a bad system crash (delayed disk writing failure) the other day. Upon restart chkdsk did it's thing and afterwards the software that was running at the time of the crash was corrupt. Uninstalling and reinstalling them solved the problem, apart for VMware Workstation 7. WS7 did not want to uninstall, so I had to remove the software manually following instructions found on the VMware support site. I then proceeded to do the following:
1) Installed VMware-workstation-7.0.0-203739.exe (i.e. the version without tools included), went to Edit-Preferences-Updates-Download all components now. That downloaded all VMware Tools apart from the windows.iso one. Clicking it again returns "All downloadable components are up to date". The windows.iso file is not on my system, and trying to install VMware Tools in the guest Windows XP obviously failed.
2) I then downloaded and installed the VMware-workstation-full-7.0.0-203739.exe. During the install an error message appeared during the VMware Tools for Windows installation stating "The MSI failed". The installation then continued and finished. I then again went to Edit-Preferences-Updates-Download all components now, but it returns "All downloadable components are up to date". The windows.iso file is not on my system, and trying to install VMware Tools in the guest Windows XP obviously failed.
3) I copied the windows.iso and the windows.iso.sig file from a Workstation 6 machine. Installing VMware tools on the guest was then no problem. The problem is that I am now running the guest with old VMware tools. I then again went to Edit-Preferences-Updates-Download all components now, but it returns "All downloadable components are up to date", even though they definately are not!
The problem is that VMware, for some reason, believes that the VMware tools for Windows is installed and up to date, while they clearly are not.
The questions are:
I am urgently awaiting updated VMware Tools (newer than the one released with the setups mentioned above) due to a confirmed bug in the current release of VMware Tools affecting Windows 7 hosts, but as of now my system seems unable to download updated VMware Tools, it can't even download the current version...

The questions are:
- How can I 'reset' the information VMware thinks it has that the VMware Tools are updated, thus forcing VMware to redownload all VMware Tools?
- Can I download the VMware Tools and install them manually?
