I used to have a 32-bit RHEL 5 server, running VMWare Server 2.0.0. It worked fine. Recently, I upgraded the server to 64-bit RHEL, and downloaded the 64-bit version of VMWare Server 2.0.1. Now, the web interface doesn't work. My machines still run, and I can RDP or VNC into them, but I can't access them throuth the web interface or the console. If I reboot the machine, the Web Interface will work for a few min, then stop. When it is not working, I open it with FireFox and get a blank white screen with "Loading..." in the title bar and "Done" in the status bar. Nothing in the logs seemed to point to a problem, but I could have missed it. If I type /etc/init.d/vmware status, it looks fine:

Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 is running
Host network detection is not running
Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet1 is running
DHCP server on /dev/vmnet1 is not running
Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet8 is running
DHCP server on /dev/vmnet8 is not running
NAT networking on /dev/vmnet8 is running
Module vmmon loaded
Module vmnet loaded

Is this related to my upgrades? If not, what could be causing the Web UI to not work?

Check your hosts file. It seems like the web interface may have som issues if the host and ip not match.

Hi,

I've got the same problem, but my RH EL 5.4 is 32-bits version. When VMware Server Host Agent is started and I try to connect with Firefox or Explorer, it works a few minutes and, suddenly, I miss the connection and the port 8333 is down. I have tried with VMware Infrastructure Client but I get a error message: "VMware Infrastructure Client could not establish the initial connection with server xxxxxxx. Details: A connection failure has ocurred". I have checked my /etc/hosts file and it's OK.

Can you help me?

Thanks

Hi,

Do you need https? If not, try to modify /etc/vmware/hostd/proxy.conf and change to AccessMode to httpAndHttps

Use http://host:8222 and try if it works better. Empty browser cache before you try this and don't forget to restart the entire server, just do restart vmware woun't work.

Thanks for your answer, rancor. I have modified /etc/vmware/hostd/proxy.conf and change to AccessMode to httpAndHttps, but I keep having tha same problem: in a few minutes, 8222 port goes from up to down. I have tried to find out why 8333 port and 8222 port are down in a few minutes but I don't find any indications.

I don't know what to do.

Hi again:

I found some indications in logs of Tomcat about the problem:

2009-10-08 12:32:32,377,waitForUpdates<=>,UpdatesErrorHandler Updates thread error notification. PrevError=null, NewError=UnknownRemoteException, NewErrorMessage=(0)null

2009-10-08 12:51:02,982,pool-1-thread-2<=>,ConfigOptionPropertyHandler queryConfigOption failed: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused

and it's that moment when 8333 port stops and /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-hostd dies

Any idea?

Thanks

have you tried restarting the web interface? I have similar problems where it just loads a blank page with nothing else, so i have to go to the vmware server and execute:

 sudo /etc/init.d/vmware-mgmt restart

Hi adambot,

Thanks for your answer. Yes, I have tried restarting the web interface. In fact, when both 8333 port and 8222 port are down, "vmware-mgmt" command is the only way to up the ports without restart all services of vmware. But, the ports work a few minutes and then they go down if you use the web interface. I think the problem comes from tomcat because java connection errors are reported into the logs.

I am thinkig of installing the version vmware server 1.x because I don't what else to do.

I also have the same problem with web Access going down about a minute after the process starts. I am on RHEL 5.4 64-bit. Funny thing is I have another system with RHEL 5.4 on 64-bit that is running perfectly. No idea what in the world is happening.. I disabled the RHEL firewall and there's no httpd or any other web services installed/turned on.

I have the exact same issue. After a few clicks in web interface, port 8333 goes down. It does not matter what you click. This is on a HP ProLiant D5. I am using kernel 2.6.30.8 and a patch vmware-server.2.0.1_x64-modules-2.6.30.4-fix.tgz.

I also have another system, IBM x3650, which works fine.

The only difference is the abovementioned patch. Could this be the reason?

I had the same problem when I upgraded to 5.4 yesterday. Previous to that I had rock solid operation for months from 64bit Centos 5.2/3 and Server 2.0.0

The solution (for me at least) was solved by following the advice here:

http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=3884 (scroll down and follow the advice in the first note)
http://communities.vmware.com/message/1179915#1179915 (add the machines name as an alias for the address 127.0.0.1)

To compile vmnet it was necessary to extract and update compat_netdevice.h in /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/vmnet.tar to comment out the struct napi_struct.

Note I also decided to upgrade from Server 2.0.0 to 2.0.1 in the process.

This is a problem with glibc in CentOS 5.4 and VMWare server 2.* please see => http://planetvm.net/blog/?p=844

Hope that helps!
