Since this is a "common" problem, resolving it is not advised on a per user basis.

Is there a workaround to this? I suppose reinstalling tools won't solve it.

William, thanks for your response.

To help you I recorded a simple demonstration of this: http://screencast.com/t/QC1UX2Ib

The expected result (as was in VMware 2.0.x versions) is a simple text table. I understand in some cases a TIFF result is desired, but mostly it's not. I would be happy if there was an option in the prefs to turn this off.

Feel free to ask for further clarification.

Thanks for providing the video... I am in the process of seeing if this issue is present in 2.x series and will update you as I have more information.

I have exactly the same problem with 3.x, and I'm going to need to backrev if this can't be resolved relatively soon. I am not particularly disappointed with 3.x's speed, and it's not hammering my laptop inordinately, but this cutting and pasting from VM to Mac and vice-versa has got to get fixed quickly. I'm losing a lot of valuable hours in workflow, and I can't bill for them.

Granted, the product was inexpensive, less than an hour's worth of my time, so I don't mind dumping the investment, but it's a bit of a PITA to go through that.

Also, can I back-convert my VM? I'm not really worried about data on the VM, because I use files off the shared host drive exclusively, providing me a pretty seamless Mac-->XP-->Mac experience, but still.

Any updates on reproducing this in-house?

I have XP SP3 and I have the latest Tools and I'm seeing the same TIFF copy/paste behavior from PC Excel 2007 to Numbers -- cell(s) pastes a TIFF into a single cell in Numbers

Other tests:
URLs luckily paste as text back and forth
Rich text from PC Word 2007 (bold, italic, strike-thru) is pasted as rich text in TextEdit, formatting preserved.
Tables from PC Word 2007 are pasted properly as a editable table in TextEdit.
Multi-cells from Numbers '09 are pasted in properly as distribute cells into PC Excel 2007.

Single cell from PC Excel 2007 s pasted as a TIFF picture in Numbers '09, TextEdit, etc.
Multi-cells from PC Excel 2007 end up as single TIFF cell in Numbers '09 or image in TextEdit.

Intra-VM test: Multi-cell section from PC Excel 2007 pasted into PC Word 2007 (same VM), pastes as editable table (not TIFF).

Summary: Copy source of PC Excel 2007 ends up as TIFF image in multiple Mac applications.

I had to re-open my case today as I have found another problem with the copy/paste problem with VMWare Fusion 3. When running in Bridged network mode, all is fine, but as soon as I switch to NAT network mode, the copy/paste between host and guest no longer works. I hope VMWare will let me re-open my case as this is frustrating to say the least. I am not suffering from the TIFF mode copy only issue (most likely as I only copy text between host/guest, not cells of data, etc).

If I hear anything back, I will update this.

Just a quick update, we now have a PR on this issue.

A temporary workaround would be to paste the text into notepad, then copy and paste back into the application in OSX.

This may or may not work with all applications... and creates double the work, but for now that should work.

Yes,

I had found that work around before but it is not 100% reliable and sometimes it just doesn't work. If I am not the only one experiencing this, is this indeed a bug that is being addressed. I have already opened a new case, but the tech wants me to completely remove VMTools, remove Fusion, clean all directories from both the guest and the host, then reinstall everything. Not something I am looking forward to, I have better things to do at times, only to find out that this is indeed a bug and my efforts will be wasted.

Just wondering.

What is a "PR" on this issue?

A PR is an internal VMware bug report meaning an issue has been opened and is being tracked within VMware for disposition and hopefully resolution.

Is there a PR number available I can give to the tech so I don't have waste my time with uninstalls and re-installs to still have the issue? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

D.

Let me ask this straight: Fusion 3 has introduced new ways of handling the copypaste. Is what we experience a feature, really? Because if so then the only thing I can hope is that the devs will put an option in the preferences to turn the behavior off.

I'm have a paid license, I also paid for the 40 bucks upgrade fee, I'm always living with the latest release, never downgrade. If I have to open a Notepad, I will open a Notepad windows and do the extra work. Sometimes it's a solution, other times it is not. I have been a Parallels user previously and I'm not going back and I will never downgrade or reinstall. That's for the lousy Windows.

I have patience, Zen is what I am while I wait for this issue to be resolved with these obscure two letter acronyms like "PR" ticket.
