I'm trying to install Windows 7 x86 on a new VM disk and it crashes with this error:

NOT_IMPLEMENTED d:/build/ob/bora-203739/bora/vmx/main/pollVMX.c:3981

The host is 64-bit Windows 7 running on a Intel Core i7 (four cores) with 6GB of RAM. I have collected the support data if anyone wants to see it. The log file is attached.

Hello,

I have the same error on an "old" (existing) vm running in vmware player. This vm was running until beginning of this week without problems. The vm is running Windows XP (32-bit), the host is running 64-bit Vista.

I have used VMware-Player 2.5.3-185404 since end of August and I did not not change the configuration.

I have received the error "NOT_IMPLEMENTED d:/build/ob/bora-203739/bora/vmx/main/pollVMX.c:3981".

After receiving this error I did an upgrade to VMware-player-3.0.0-203739 without succes - same error.

The line before this error is "VIDE: (0x1f0) OUTB Cmd 0xf5, Unknown ATA Command on drive 0" ( the log is attached)

I installed the VMware-player-3.0.0-203739 on another host running Windows 7 (64-bit) and used a copy of this vm without any problems.

Has anybody an idea?

Your VM may crash because of a unknown ATA-command ???

try to specify an iso-file instead of the real CD-drive.
In case you really need to use a real CD specify the driveletter of the device.

hi continuum,

the CDROM drive is disable, I guess it's the IDE disk I am using.

But a copy of this vm runs without problems on another workstation without problems.

Could the resaon be the last Vista x64 updates?

during the log it was not disabled - the VM was trying to use it

Hi,

I had the problems also with a newly created vm using win 7 x64.

Then I lukily found the reason:
If I start the vmware workstation using "run as administrator" then I have no problems with all my vm's - no matter if the CD is enabled or not...

Hello to all,

very same problem here: old XP VM onto Workstation 6.5/Windows Vista 64 ultimate on two machines: a laptop and a desktop

installed Workstation 7 on both, upgraded to Windows 7 64b on both (Ultimate on laptop, home premium on desktop)

first launch on laptop, VM converted/upgraded, working well for days and still now
this evening, same VM copied on desktop a few days ago (and launched just one time to check it, without problems), crash with this error.

CD trick not useful
launching Workstation with admin privileges solve the problem
(strange, no need to have admin privileges on the laptop)

something to do with the difference between W7 Home Premium and Ultimate ???

or a recent patch of W7 ?

Hi There,

Launching the program with admin privileges in the W7 Ultimate solved the problem in 32 bits and in 64 bits. Question remains: Why do we have this problem? Is there a patch or a solution from vmware?

I have the same problem using Workstation 7 installed on Windows 7 x64 with a Windows XP Guest.
Removing the USB Controller from the guest settings, allowed me to boot the Windows XP Guest successfully.

why remove the usb controller when running as administrator gives you a full working xp in vmworkstation 7 ?

Using windows 7
VMWorkstation 7
XP virtual.
Running as administrator.

why remove USB ? - because the new USB implementation of WS 7 is work in progress - it has several issues
