Some really newbie questions (VMware workstation and Ubuntu guest) posted: Nov 5, 2009 3:48 PM

Hi,

I'm a fairly new VMware user, and have some questions:

1) I have VMware Workstation 6.5.2 running on a Windows 2003 host.

I just created a new guest and installed Ubuntu 9.10 (desktop), and it was kind of working ok. I also installed VMware tools for linux. Network for the guest is set to "Bridged".

However, after I rebooted the guest, I noted that I don't have connectivity:

I just found that if I run a command:

ifconfig eth0 up

then, the networking works.

I was wondering why the network doesn't work, to begin with, after I startup the guest?

2) VMware Tools - copy/paste: As mentioned above, I installed VMware tools for Linux on this guest, so after starting the guest, I don't have to do Ctrl+Alt to move the mouse pointer between the guest and the host.

From the dialog, I have to manually run "vmware-user" after starting the guest, to get copy-paste between the guest and the host. But, when I run vmware-user as root, I get:

Copy-paste seems to work after that, but why am I getting the above messages?

3) VMware-Tools (vmware-toolbox): I gather that to get shared folders working, I need to run vmware-toolbox, so I run:

nohup vmware-toolbox &

and the vmware-toolbox pops up.

But, I can't figure out what else I need to do to share folders with the host?

I've tried adding folders in Settings, but where do I "see" the shared folders in the Ubuntu guest?

You need to have
1. Shared Folder enabled in the guest options
2. Assigned a host folder to that option
3. vmhgfs must be loaded in the guest (check with lsmod | grep vm)

In /etc/network/interfaces, I have:

root@ubuntu4nc:~# cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

I'm not that familiar with Ubuntu, but is there something else I need to do to get the networking to start at boot?

Re. shared folders, I just noted that the vmhgfs is not compiling (Error 2). From my research it looks like this is because Ubuntu 9.10 uses 2.6.31 kernel.

I'm thinking that upgrading VMware WS to 6.53 might be helpful, but I haven't done a VMware upgrade before, so I'm not sure I want to do that. I guess I'll have to live w/o shared folders :(...

Hi,

This is very strange :(...

I checked dmesg, and there it says "eth0: link up", so it looks like eth0 is suppose to be up when it's booted. However, still no connectivity (i.e., ping fails), until I manually run "ifconfig eth0 up".

Hi,

I guess that this might be frowned up, but, for the record, I just did the following:

  • I created a new file, "S03startnetworking" in /etc/rc6.d
  • In /etc/rc6.d/S03startnetworking, I had:

#!/bin/sh

ifconfig eth0 up

  • I chmod'ed /etc/rc6.d/S03startnetworking to a+x

After that, when I reboot the guest, networking is working!

I've gone through several reboot and shutdown/startup cycles, and it seems to work consistently.

Hi,

FYI, I decided to try to upgrade my VMware WS to 6.5.3.

I just did that, and after that, was able to build the VMware Tools in the Ubuntu 9.10 guest, including the driver for the shared folders.

Also, I removed the /etc/rc6.d/S03startnetworking file, and it looks like networking now works w/o the additional startup file.
