Hi all...my team and I have been using VMWare Workstation for years. I have been looking on the VMW website and cannot find a product that fits my use case (if VMW even creates such said product):

We'd like to have a VMW product that installs on the hard drive which replaces an Operating System...therefore, when we power up the computer, a VMWare product starts up rather than Windows or another OS. So imagine powering up your laptop and 10 seconds later VMWare Workstation is running. :)

Once the VMW product has opened up, we can navigate to another hard drive and open a VM that was created on VMWare Workstation 6.0 and higher. So in essence we are removing all the Windows (or other OS) overhead to make our VMs perform better. We use laptops to demo software so we don't have access to things like 16GB of memory or super fast CPUs...just whatever laptop technology exists.

Does such a VMW product exist? The closest I have found is ESXi...however, that acts more of as a server where other machines would connect to it. What we are looking for is basically a way to boot our laptops into a VM so that we are not using Windows and all of it's memory and CPU overhead. If there was a slick VMW product that would do what we are looking for, that would be terrific.

Thanks so much in advance!

-Eric

Eric, while I am no vmware expert, I may offer some advice.

You're correct about ESXi. While it may sound like it does what you want it to, It doesn't provide anyway to access the guest OS from the console. It relies on the viClient for that. Thus you would would have to use another machine to see the "desktops" of your VM guests/ However, I believe ESX and ESXi are the only two "bare metal" offering from vmware. If you could live with the restriction above, ESXi might be your best choice. It can even be installed to a USB thumb drive.

If you feel that Windows is too resource hungry you could try a version of Linux and run the free vmware Player for Linux to load up your VM guests.

ESX is just a highly customized version of Linux. That tells you how streamlined it can be compared to Windows. So Linux would probably be your "leanest" option. You could even customize your own version Linux to include the Vmware player and have it all boot from a cd. That would be ideal for those who aren't very technical.

For the workstation option, they're more affordable than you'd expect. Check with HP regarding their refurbished xw8600 and z800 workstations. Quad-core single processor systems can be had for ~$1400. You can beef them up yourself with a 2nd processor and 16GB of RAM for another $1000. Plus they work beatifully with ESXi (I do this myself).

here is a very lite Windows based solution using Workstation.
The video shows it using vmplayer - but it can also be configured to open Workstation and allow to run more than a single VM.

1) I couldn't find any pre-built ISO images or LiveCDs that included the vmware Player. I did find several references to the fact that the vmware Player cannot be redistributed as per the terms of the EULA. WIth that being said, I was able to find instructions on re-mastering a Knoppix LiveCD to include programs that you choose: http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Knoppix_Remastering_Howto

2) I had forgotten that vmware also has their free vmware Server product. It's the "Server" version of vmware Workstation that's meant to be run on top of any existing operating system (Windows/Linux). This might work for you since it does include console access to the VMs (unlike ESX/ESXi).

3) Finally, have you ever given any thought to running your VMs in Amazon's cloud services instead of locally? Their S3 storage and CloudFront services are very cheap (considering).

Another option might be to use the ACE features of VMware Workstation 7 ... somehow. I'd have to play around with that a bit before I say anything else in that regard. In the meantime, somebody else might be able to further expand on it.
