Best practice for ESXi HOST swap file? posted: May 20, 2009 1:43 AM

Does anyone have a best practice doc for the location of the ESXi Swap file location?

We are debating whether to store this on local storage, or whether it is OK on the Filer that hosts our VMs. I am guessing there may be a performance benefit - but am not sure how much difference it would make.

Any whitepapers would be great . . I can't find any!

Local swap file can increase VMotion timeout.
Also there could be some problem with VMware HA (you can lost some data!).

For these reason is better leave the swap with the VM folder.
Only on datastore like NFS is better use local file (for storage performance issue).

I am talking about ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchlocation (ie, the HOST swap file, rather than Virtual Machine Swap files)

Sorry. In this case just use local storage, if is possible.

but I am hoping for some reasoning as to why local is better, perhaps a best practice guide?

Installation Guide.

But if you do not have local storage (or is not in your plan) I can unstestand you doubt.
In this case you can plan to use SAN storage

This seems to be an older thread but I wanted to see if I could take it a bit further.

I'd like to get some input or documentation that outlines the best practices to scale configuring ESXi swap files.

Scenario: 16 ESXi hosts

Options that I see:

1) Configure all the ESXi host swap files on one dedicated datastore
2) Spread the ESXi host swap files across all available datastores
3) Configure all the ESXi host swap files on one datastore with other VMs

Which is the best option and what have others done? Does swap files require Tier I storage or can we get away with Tier II or Tier III storage?

There are a lot of assumptions here but I'd like to evaluate the best option. Thanks!
