Multiple view connection servers? posted: Nov 3, 2009 7:20 AM

I am in a school system, we have students logging into xp desktops. We have a limited number of office 2k7 licenses that I want to deploy in a lab environment. So when a student is in that classroom they get the desktop that has office on it.

If I just create another pool with office I cannot stop students from accessing that desktop from another classroom, if I create dummy users and entitle that pool to the dummy users then my students don't get their network drives mapped to my documents.

If I could point those thin clients to another connection server I could provision a pool just for that classroom. Can I do this and then point that connection server at my existing infrastructure client and server pools or do I need to have separate everything?

Any other ideas?

You can run multiple Connection Manager servers, by pointing to that new Connection manager server. However, what you're describing does not really sound like a View issue, but rather a profile issue. You should be able to set up profiles in AD the same way for both test users and real users. Sounds like your using folder re-direction for some accounts but not others. If you set up your AD users the same way, that should be a non-issue and could eliminate the need for another Connection server.

Good luck.

The only way to accomplish that would be to Entitle multiple desktops for that logon account, or create multiple student logons for that user and Entitle one desktop for each logon.

Good luck

From what you have been describing having two separate brokers is
definitely your best option based on what your trying to do.

You should be able to point both brokers at the same VC/ESX
environment without any trouble.

Just don't add one virtual machine to both brokers or it will cause
problems!!!

Mike

As I am understanding it, you could try the following:

1. Create a pool of desktops (Pool A) on Connection Server A and entitle that to your user group
2. Create a pool of desktops (Pool B) on Connection Server B and entitle that to same user group as above.

Point thin clients in Classroom A to Connection Server A, and they will get a desktop from Pool A
Point thin clients in Classroom B to Connection Server B, and they will get a desktop from Pools B

Same AD user names/groups etc can be used, but they will be given the desktop that is managed by whichever Connection Server their client connects to. The View Manager servers can be totally independent from each other, yet still connect to same AD and same vCenter instance if desired.

Is that what you are looking to accomplish?

The implementation of a seperate connections broker is the quickest and most cost effective method of doing this, a more elegant solution would be to use an Environment manager to configure desktops based on connection IP/Client name, AppSense EM is one such posibility

Hi,
Actually you wouldn't need to create another database or View Composer instance since both Connection Servers would be pointing to the same VC/View Composer environment as Mike suggested.
(View Composer must be installed on the same system as VC)

If I'm understanding this correctly, you'll want to have the following:

1. 2 Connection Servers - CS1 and CS2 both pointing to the same VC/View Composer system
2. a) CS1 deploys a pool using a master image that contains Office 2007 for students in Classroom A
b) Point all clients in Classroom A to CS1
3. a) CS2 deploys a pool using a master image that DOES NOT contain Office 2007 for students in Classroom B
b) Point all clients in Classroom B to CS2
4. Both pools would use the same entitlements. Depending on which Connection Server they access, they would get different desktops.

Hope this helps.

Michael

... Just realized this is basically a rehash of stonegossard's suggestions ...

We are a school in Rotherham who have run View for the past year and a half on Wyse thin clients. Because of a limitation in the original Wyse OS the only way we could be sure to assign desktops to clients in a particular room was to create a connection server for each room with one pool (newer OS version has addressed this issue). This ensures that only desktops from that broker are assigned to that room. It has worked well. As to the provisioning errors:- 1. have you deleted a pool and then created another with the same name (can cause issues if it is not deleted cleanly ie disable provisioning, delete machines from disk (in broker) then delete pool) on a particular broker? 2. Are you using linked clones? if so have you deletes the temps correctly? Are the errors when you add to the domain (I had this and had to sysprep the original image, delete machine form AD, re add to domain etc)?
