Now interestingly I have looked at our outage logs - Failures in sustems due to ESX or service console issues in the three years we have had ESX running on 16 hosts, Zero. Controlled restarts for service packs, 2, outage to guests becasue of this, Zero.
Restarts, failuress or other unexplained problems with management through Virtual Centre - Since January 2007 Virtual Centre 2.0 service has crashed 3 times, unexplained, just stopped responding, services restarted to resolve - 2 cases of orphaned objects when VC has lost track of the service console - 16 controlled restarts for service packs to Windows., 4 of the windows guests have required restarts when the VMWare agent in them lost the plot and stopped reporting stats or allowing VMotion.
Now if only their Windows developers could write code as highly avaialble as the ESX guys, but I guess they are using .Net, so I wonder howmany of the odd problems are related to that, and the biggest archillies heel, service pack restarts for the host OS casuing more downtime than any other issue.
Yes, I would like to see an option for the Virtual Centre to run on Non Windows OS's, and the client should be platform independent.
