VMWare USB Arbitrator returned error code 4 (VMW 7 on Win 7 x64)

It goes like this, VM running (32-bit XP/W2K3), memory sticks gets plugged into the host & it is avilable on the host

Try to connect it to the VM, hosts tries to install new hardware Vmware USB device, it contacts Windows Update etc

In the meantime I get the VMWare USB Arbitrator returned error code 4 in VM notification, by which time new hardware install says Device Unplugged

But the actual device is still available to the host, I can try to connect it again to VM (without unplugging first) & it might work or might not

Sometimes I need to unplug & plug back in & try again

That never happened on W2k3 32-bit host with any 6.x workstation

Anybody has a permanent solution?

Thanks

Seb

USB Arbitrator returned error code 4 has been reported a few times already - no solution though.

Watch the related posts - hopefully someone from VMware sees any of them

Wow, that is impressive, and instantly makes me feel better

I hope somebody from Vmware reads these forums...

After getting that error, I have done the following to make it work:

  • Plug out the USB cable on my Nokia (E71)

  • Plug it in again, select 'Mass Storage' mode

  • Unmount on the host, mount on the guest

  • Plug out the USB cable on my Nokia (E71)

  • Plug it in again, select 'PC Suite' mode

I believe once mounted as a mass storage device on the guest, unplugging it and plugging it in again automatically connects it to the guest, not to the host first.

I've done the above on Ubuntu 9.10 x64 (Karmic) with VMWare Workstation 7 x64.

The version 3.1.3 build-324285 of VMWare Player solved this issue. Smiley Happy

I also had same problem and following steps worked for me (after wasting lot of time),

1. After receiving "VMWare USB Arbitrator returned error code 4" in VM, I went to "Device Manager" on my HOST system (Not guest VM)

2. I observed whenever I try to connect USB device thru VM menu of VMWare workstation, a device named "VMWare USB Device" appears into my HOST's "Device Manager" with yellow mark.

3. I updated driver by pointing to "c:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VMWare\USB" folder.

4. Once the driver was updated on the HOST system, I went back to VMWare workstation and bingo! I  found that my XP VM had already detected the USB device.

Summary: In my case, problem was that my HOST system was not finding driver for "VMWare USB device", which appears when you try to connect USB device in VM.

Hope this helps!
