I have ESXi running (on a USB memory stick) and am trying to make a backup of the configuration. When running either vicfg-cfgbackup or esxcfg-cfgbackup through the RCLI or on the RCLI appliance, I get the following error:

Saving firmware configuration to d:\ESX_backup_09102008.dat ...
GET https://192.168.1.254/downloads/configBundle-BV5-ESX.bessems.eu.tgz unsuccessful : 404 Not Found

What am I doing wrong?

I have the exact same problem. I did notice that the tool from the older version 3.5 RCLI worked ok, even with a vSphere 4 ESXi host. I hadn't realised that the output was a tgz, so once I renamed the files it produced for me I was able to verify that they were ok. However, I guess it's possible that ESXi 4.0.0 may have more files it's supposed to collect into that tgz.

EDIT. Hmm I see from your post dates that you must have been using that older version. Strange.

Seems to work fine for me now. Perhaps without the quotes around the file path the backslashes are a problem.
