Has anyone actually ever been able to copy ANYTHING with rsync between 2 esxi hosts?

I've searched and experimented and tried and what not, but I've not been able to copy any file between 2 esxi hosts. Both with rsync deamon installed and running, not forward, not backwards.

Is there any linux/esxi guru who has the posibility to try this and tell me I'm an idiot? I'd love to hear this.....

some pointers:

thanks in advance,

Is it possible.
You need a rsync binary for ESXi and a correct configuration.

See:
http://wiki.neddix.com/How_to_make_a_statically_linked_Rsync_Binary
http://wiki.contribs.org/Backup_of_ESXi_Virtual_Machines_using_Affa

And also your link:
rsync a file from one esxi server to another

Remember that you cannot do a rsync of file that are in use (for example the *-flat.vmdk files).
So you have to play with snapshot...

Do you have it working?!? Or do you say this because you think it should work?!?
I've only used between two ESX (in this case rsync was with the COS files).
But should work also on ESXi.

The more daemons you have running in the tiny resource constrained ESXi console the more chance to destabilize the core functionality - hosting VM's. Since rsync isn't a part of the ESXi services you don't have any guarantee that it will not cause reliability issues. With an NFS datastore you can use other tools like scp to copy files. I would also look at something a little more robust than a Windows server as an NFS host.

I have always dealt with small companies. My reference was to rsync. The dropbear server is a part of the standard ESXi install and is somewhat less stressful on the Host reliability. If you want some real reliability set up a separate physical NFS server. Set it up as a datastore on both hosts. When you copy your VM's from either ESXi host they will be visible from both ESXi hosts and can be started directly from the NFS datastore. Have a look at http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760 for a script that you can schedule to clone your VMs.
