Interested in How Everyone's Study Techniques for VCP-410 posted: Nov 4, 2009 5:42 AM

I have been an avid lurker here for a long time but have just now decided to post. I am studying for the VCP-410, but am in a quandary on how to go about doing it. I have several labs here at work and one at home and have been installing ESX(i) since 3.5. I have followed Scott's (great site BTW) advice, used Forbes' vReference Cards, read Simon Long's notes and links daily. I even bought Scott Lowe's "Mastering vSphere 4 (GREAT BOOK). I am up to speed I think on that.

My question/problem is how do/did you all go about studying for this exam? It's not like any IT exam I have studied before. Did you go through all 8 Sections and "Master" each one before moving on to the next or did you just go down the list of the blueprint one by one? I have labbed a lot of things in no particular order but that seems chaotic and for me I like order when I study. But with so much to study and 17 pages of objectives, sometimes it seems like I will never get to the end.

Then my next gripe is I have a coworker who, to me at least, took the "easy way" and studied ONLY braindump material (I wont name them to give them that tag) and now my boss has given him an opportunity that I believe I could've done and also he passed the exam in less than a month using this material and I have yet to do it. Of course, they let him go to the class and I have not been given that opportunity, but irregardless. I wanted to know your thoughts on that as well

I apologize for being long-winded especially on my first post, but my intention is to LEARN the material not CRAM it in. Thanks for listening. I look forward to any help you all have.

Hi PMan,

Glad you like the site, but sorry to hear your quandry. All I can say is that the topics in the blueprint are absolutely key, but it sounds like you know that already. Print it out and make sure you know the concepts covered, and that you know how to make those things happen. You might find it useful to create some study notes or flash cards as you're going through, for things that you're not 100% on or that you think need memorizing. You have access to Simon's practice exams, and the official mock exam - use those as a guide to the sort of things that might come up. It is a shame that every exam soon has a braindump available, it certainly makes life more difficult for those of us that like to do things "the right way". We're always here on the forum to offer guidance on particular topic areas..... Best of luck!

Scott.

Hi,

Everything that you need to know is contained in the online library:

http://pubs.vmware.com/vsp40/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm

you have a mock exam here: http://mylearn.vmware.com/quiz.cfm?item=15211

and the blueprint for the exam: http://mylearn.vmware.com/lcms/mL_faq/2726/VMware%20Certified%20Professional%20on%20vSphere%204%20Blueprint%208.13.09.pdf

the best way I found to study is to read up on a topic, take notes and then go to your test environment and practice, configure, install, upgrade etc, also learn the maximums and understand what they mean:

http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_config_max.pdf

If you found this information useful, please consider awarding points for "Correct" or "Helpful". Thanks!

what the pros here have posted for the exams is true.

Study the PDFs,download esx and vsphere to test the functions well .. .

Maximum config is also something that you will still need to know!

Cheers!
