I was told/under the assumption that the Workstation 6 license I received with my VCP3 certification was technology approved. So when Workstation 9 was released I would be able to supply a valid license.
When my WS 6 serial did not work with WS 7 and I was unable to upgrade I created a support request with the VMware Customer Solutions Center and this is their response:

Hello Erik,

I have verified with the Workstation Team and if you
receive a free copy of Workstation 6 together With your VCP Certification, you
do not qualify for an upgrade to Workstation 7.

You will need to make a purchase of Workstation 7. The
trial key is good for 30 days only.

Hi all,

Candidates who pursue and obtain the VCP4 certification will receive Workstation 7 licenses, once we have finished the internal process required to obtain those licenses we will get them out.
