I made some improvements to search that should address the issues listed in this thread:

1. Blank Results page: If you are using Internet Explorer in a community with a lot of sub-communities, e.g. http://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn, and you use the "Search Community" box in the top right, you will no longer get a blank page. This happened because IE has a 2083 character limit for URLs, and the community software was building out a longer string than that to identify all of the sub-communities it needed to search. I changed the code so that if there are more than 50 sub-communities, it just searches the whole site (and therefore doesn't need to build out the long search string that specifies all of the communities). This fixes the issue reported by K-Mac.

2. Google Search: I added a "Search VMware Communities using Google" option to the advanced search. Please see http://communities.vmware.com/search.jspa

Let me know if this works for you, or if there are other improvements to make on this.

Thanks, Robert

Hello Robert, thanks for taking a look at this. I'll let you know if I run into this issue again.

On a different topic have you had any luck with the 'Receive Email Notifications'(http://communities.vmware.com/thread/202308?tstart=50) issue? I still find that that button works less than 25% of the time for me.

Actually upon searching for my thread regarding email notifications I ran into another issue with the search page (http://communities.vmware.com/search.jspa). It seems that changing the sort by or number of threads no longer updates the list.

Cheers

Kevin

Perhaps it's changed recently, but the Communities search has failed to turn up posts I knew existed.

As a concrete example I just hit, I was looking for Core dump during exit with VMWare Fusion Beta (build 184177) [repost] (apologies, it's in a private forum). I tried to find it by searching for "report" by "etung" (my post contained the phrase "Thank you for the nice bug report") in that subforum - I got 10 results, none of which were that thread.

Hi Eric and others,

We did a fix on the search index, and the example you gave above now works. With the new fix, all of my test cases where search didn't work now work as expected.

I would like input from the community on their current experience with site search. Please let me know if you execute any searches that return incorrect results, or also let me know if you think VMware Communities site search is working correctly. Your feedback will help me identify if there are any issues I missed.

Thanks! - Robert
