We upgraded all our Hosts to vSphere 4.0 with update manager as recommended. All went well and things seem to be running just fine. However we have one ESXi (we only have one) server that the upgrade baseline has flagged as incompatible, the Message is "Upgrade to same version is not supported"

Ummm., if it is the correct version and VUM knows it why is it flagged as needing upgraded and incompatible?

The baselines we are using are all the default ones, we have no need to customize them yet.

This is just an annoying little glitch, does anyone know how to correct it?

Hi Bryon,

Did the upgrade task for this host fail?

I think the host got upgraded partially. i.e. even though the version bumped up, there are still some updates missing on that host.

Easiest way out for you is to upgrade to update manager 4.1 beta and retry the operation.

If you cannot do that, try the following:

1. Get the esxi upgrade bundle zip, unzip the contents in some directory.

2. Copy unzipped contents to some temp directory on esxi host. (You will proably need to enable ssh on the host and copy the contents using scp -- more here: http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/ESXi_enable_SSH.php)

3. Log into console by either using unsupported mode or through ssh.

4. Go to the directory where the contents were transfered.

5. run chmod +x upgrade.sh

6. Apply the updates manually by running

  • upgrade.sh --component=tools

  • upgrade.sh --component =vicilient

7. Scan the host again with update manager, verify that it is now compliant.
