Hi, can anyone tell me where I can find documentation that covers DR techniques using VMware Infrastructure 3 / ESX 3.5?

So far, I've only found documentation for DR using VMware in conjunction with other products like Double-Take.

What I'm most interested in is possible data loss scenarios and associated recovery steps.

Thanks

Joe

Hello.

Check out the VIOPS site. The "A Practical Guide to Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery with VMware Infrastructure" book might be useful as well.

Good Luck!

If you are looking for virtual machine recoveryfrom corruption backup is still your best method - at a base level is treat the VM like you would a physical machine if you have a back solution already in place like Netbackup - just install a backup agent in the VM and backup as you normally would - a step above that would be VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) this will still utilize the existing backup infrastructure but removes the load form the ESX server - for Blue Screen you can use VMware HA that will restart a single VM that has blue screened-

Also a point about snapshots they allow you to revert back to s specific point in time - best practice is they only be used sparingly in production because if they grow to large the performance of a VM will be affected

Snapshot is an deal tool to recover formt hat botched software install/update - because it will allow you to revert to the exact of the VM priot to the start of the install - you will just have to mandate to your users that they have a fixed time to confirm that the update/install was successful because at the end of that time period you will committ the changes unless you hear differently - the documentation is really aimed at people who will run snapshots indefinitely -
