I've recently installed vmware player august 2009 preview and vmnetcfg.exe is missing.
There is some replacement for this tool?. I need to configure what adapter will be associated to vmnet0 (Bridge), because I have multiple network adapters and autodetect doesn't work for me.
Also, the vmware tools download for windows 2000 and later doesn't install, showing the following error:
"Component failed to install".

It sounds like you installed the stand-alone VMware Player tech preview, "VMware-player-e.x.p-185517.exe". That installer does not include the Virtual Network Editor; that tool is only available in Workstation. You should have access to download and install Workstation as part of this tech preview.

I am curious about your problems with "auto bridging". Can you describe your host setup? What network adapters do you have on your host? Which of those are enabled and connected to a link that is up? Is the VM defaulting to an adapter on the host that does not have a link? Or, is it defaulting to an adapter that you don't want it to default to?

Thanks.

I do not think that VMware Player has ever included vmnetcfg.exe. That probably will stay true in this release, though nothing is for sure.

You could configure your VM to use NAT instead of bridged. Your host would be responsible for determining which network interface packets go in and out on, and that would likely be the wired card.

Though I guess you want to communicate with that VM on your internal network. Yea... bridged would be better. You could install Workstation and use the virtual network editor to configure things, but then just use Player anyway. I don't think you'd be prevented from doing that by the license checks.

vmnetcfg.exe was present in VMware Player 2.5.2. I'll bet that version would work just fine.

Ah, so it was present in previous Player releases. Hmm, yea this unfortunately leaves you in a tight spot. I think there are issues with uninstalling a product with the networking components; the uninstall will remove your networking setup, so you probably can't install a different version to configure your environment and then switch to the newest release to run VMs in that setup.

You could try installing a dummy WS that you'll never use (apart from the network UI), or coinstalling an older Player... ugh, I'll see what's up with this product change.

I don't like the fact that users have to even use a separate application to configure a VMs networking setup as desired (what you're trying to do is ridiculously reasonable). But that is an aged old war that I have been losing for years :(

Worst case is that you can edit the VMnet connection properties as you
would a wired or wireless adapter; from the Network Connections
window. You still can't change the auto-bridging properties from
there, though.

This is very frustrating. In VMware Player 2.5.3 I was using vmnetcfg.exe for port forwarding. Now with VMware Player 3.0.0 build-197124 vmnetcfg.exe is missing and I cannot do that. Please do not remove vmnetcfg.exe from player.

Thanks

I, too, am running into problems with Hamachi and bridging. It's very frustrating. On a computer that I use Workstation on, I am able to get around this using the configuration utility to tell it to ignore Hamachi for auto bridging. Without this, NAT is the only option that allows Internet access, but has obvious limitations.

The vmnetcfg.exe is included in the installer, but won't be installed.

1. Run the installer with /e option. For example:
VMware-player-3.0.0-197124.exe /e .\extract
All contents will be extracted to "extract" folder.

2. Open "network.cab" and copy vmnetcfg.exe to your installation folder,
typically "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Player\".
