Hey Guys,

New to VMware fusion and was wondering if any seasoned veteran's can shed some light on how to establish a wireless internet connection? Does the virtualization software make use of the host computer's internet connection (i.e.-share it) or, does it establish a separate link of its own using the host's wireless adaptor card? I suppose the answer is in the manual or on the website but, I haven't had time to sit down and tinker with it. Any help greatly appreciated.

Fusion always presents a wired adapter to the guest regardless of the presents of a WiFi Adapter on the Host.


Have a look at: Understanding Networking in VMware Fusion


If you want a WiFi Adapter in the Guest then you will have to use a USB WiFi Network Adapter that you provide from a 3rd Party like Linksys, Netgear, etc.

Thanks for the speedy reply. So I can't use the Mac's internal wireless adaptor? That sucks. The article is a nice introduction to the topic, but fails to mention this subtle, yet important point you brought up. Thanks again for posting.

The Virtual Machine will use the Host's WiFi Adapter if that adapter is the Active Adapter however in the Virtual Machine the NIC will always show as a Wired Adapter. So as long as the Host has Network Connectivity the Guest will also have connectivity through whatever Host Adapter is Active. However if you need to show a WiFi Adapter in the Guest for whatever the reason may be you will have to provide your own, exclusive of the Hosts WiFi Adapter.

Seems that I did have a wireless choice running on my MacBookPro without any special adapters. The Typical Windows XP wireless connection icon appeared listing of wireless networks. A few days ago I upgraded to Fusion 1.3 and the icon went missing. I have not been able to get it back. Actually not sure that I did anything special to make it appear in the first place.

I used to see the little connection icon in the lower right showing the connection as wireless. Was I dreaming?

Windows XP without the presence of a WiFi NIC installed in the OS does not see or search for WiFi Networks nor can one connect to a WiFi Network directly from within Windows XP without WiFi NIC installed in the OS so I'd have to say you were dreaming.

Fusion's Network will use the OS X Host's WiFi Adapter (AirPort) however as far as a Virtual Machine and the Guest OS the Guest OS only sees a Wired NIC unless you provide a 3rd Party WiFi NIC like a USB WiFi NIC.

OK. Not dreaming anymore as I sit here looking at the new Linksys nic adaptor I installed last night. Did get it to find my wireless network and connect but the connection fails after 5 min or so. Any ideas?
