I would like to know;

In the HCL there are a number of san devices from HP that will work with ESX. There is no mention of them working with ESXI and I am wondering if this is an oversite or that ESXI wont run a SAN that is direct attached storage to 3 ESXI servers.

Could someone clarify this for me?

Most of the shared storage devices are compatible. Perhaps this page will help: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

If they work with ESX they must work also with ESXi.
Anyway in VMware official HCL you have more detail also on supported version.
