I'm going to be doing the VCP from vi3 to 4 upgrade and was planning on working towards the VCDX but am curious if anyone knows an eta on when this will be official for version 4?

Also will there be an upgrade test or another full effort when version 4 is finalized?

Thanks in advance!

You'll know more when VMware releases more info, until then, it's all speculation.

From official page there is only VCDX on VI3:
http://www.vmware.com/services/certification-r.html
An there are no rumors about the VS4 version.

You can try to contact the Certification Team at certification@vmware.com to have more info.

You can register for the test now if you are going to VMworld. I am taking the VCP 4 test on August 31st at VMworld. I am also working on defending my design - hopefully on Sept 4th, right after VMworld. There are currently only 13 or 14 VCDX holders. All were originally VMware employees (I hear that one has left VMware). They are still figuring it all out for the VCDX 3, so give it some time while they figure our scalability, security, etc. I hear word that they are planning a VCDX 3 to 4 upgrade path as well.

Obviously, most of this is just rumour and the schedule for all of this is up in the air.

Does anyone know if there is any new information on this?

I'm ready to take the Enterprise exam for VI3 but I'm pretty sure VMware will move to VCDX 4 before I can complete it. I don't want to spend several hundred dollars on exams that I will have to upgrade in order to get the certification. I would just like to know what options I'll have to consider before I start laying down any cash..

I've heard nothing else since I posted that link in my previous reply. A lot of energy has gone into the VCP4 and VI3 Design exams in the last few weeks - now those are both live there's every reason to expect the Certification team to be looking at VCDX4, both in terms of those yet to start, those part way through VCDX3 (like me), and those lucky few that have already gone "all the way" with VCDX3. As soon as I know more, and as soon as I'm allowed to say, I'll be posting on here, my blog, and my web site about it.

We are working on VCDX v4 as we speak. But it will take it a while as both the Enterprise Exam and the Design Exam need to be updated. We hope it will be ready beginning of 2010. I will keep you up to date,

What's that process going to look like to re-up though?

Is it going to be another 1 year cycle or just passing one of the written exams or both?

Hi Duncan,

I am prepping for the Admin and Design exams. I know these exams are about $400 each. I anticipate that I will NOT complete the design defense before VMware upgrades the first two VCDX exams.

My question is, will I need to retake those two exams and spend an additional $800 or will I be able to complete the VCDX 3 and perform some sort of upgrade? Another question is what will the upgrade path be and how long will we have to complete it before the VCDX certification expires?

Thanks,

Rick Boyett

I actually don't know yet. from what I have heard there will be 1 exam to upgrade your VCDX from 3 -> 4. But that means you will need to complete the full certification first.

Yea, I think that would be the obvious path.

The only problem that it usually takes a long time to complete the VCDX due to the design defense portion.

I would suggest that you offer that upgrade test to anyone that has completed the first two exams but has yet to take the design defense. Most folks going after the VCDX are going to be at least a VCP 4 anyways so they would be working on that path. That should minimize the inconvience to something that is reasonable.. :)

Thanks for listening.

There are so many permutations to deal with here:

VCP3 + Enterprise3

VCP3 + Enterprise3 + Design3

VCP3 + Enterprise3 + VCP4

VCP3 + Enterprise 3 + Design 3 + VCP4

VCDX3

VCDX3 + VCP4
