VMware video codec problems posted: Jun 14, 2009 11:32 PM

Hi guys,

I've been trying for a while to re-encode a video captured with Workstation, so I can edit out bits and also re-encode so it can be played on any PC (no need for vmware codec).

In my previous thread, Camtasia studio was suggested, and indeed, this package seems to suit my requirements.

My issue, however seems to be that every time I try to re-encode using camtasia, I get the following error:

Bolded for clarity: the faulting module appears to be the vmware codec...?

Also, a further tell tale sign is that when played in Windows media player, media player crashes at approximately the same point in the video...

Platform for both of those crashes was a Lenovo T500 running on Windows 7 RC (64 bit), but I have the same problem on my Dell E6400 running Vista 64 Business SP2 as well (was running on the Lenovo for the last time I tried just to rule out dodgy hardware - same error on both machines says to me its not hardware related).

Is 64 bit a supported platform for the codec? It installed happily without complaint...

I use/administer: ESX 3.5 | VirtualCenter 2.5 | Workstation 6.5 | Vmware Server 2.0 | Windows 2003 | FreeBSD | Redhat EL

By the way - nobody here knows your previous thread.

Suggestion : use a clean XP 32bit to do your video edits with Camtasia - not one of those horrible 64 bit NT6 or 7 platforms - a VM will do for this

don't know if it doesn't work ... anyway - I use a 32bit XP to do all my edits of Workstation-movies with Camtasia - no issues whatsoever

I use WS 6.5.2 - no problems with vmnc.dll

I have a similar problem simply playing back a recording in Windows Media Player or Live Photo Gallery. I recorded with VMware Workstation 6.5.2 today and tried to play it back on my Vista 32-bit system. Windows Media Player crashes, with the codec at fault.

Yes, same system. More detail is that the playback works for the first three minutes, then WMP halts. Repeat and it is consistent. Appears that some data got encoded in the video file that cannot be decoded.

i'm having the same problem. i have a capture around from a 6.5.2 workstation. WMP crashes after approx. 7:24 - this is where the virtual machine rebooted, and thus the resolution changed - i suspect this to be the problem in my case.

all you others seeing this crash - did your VM change the resolution?

Cheers, Markus

Resolution changes during a video-capture are no problem here
