Their white papers and engeneers and my test envyronment all agree

OK, you tell Netapp Sales, tell them to talk to the Netapp Engineers, because one side WON'T sell us a deduplication for ESX / Datastores, because it't not possible.

Sales (and we had many meetings this year) you can't use dedupe for VMFS and ESX on Netapp with a FC / iSCSI LUN.

So either you are not asking the right questions or giving them ALL the information for what you are trying to do, OR Sales is trying to sell us something else, because they told us in order to utilize DeDupe we NEED to be on NFS.

For ESX to see the space savings you do have to have NFS

(along with a lot of other nice features)

The dedupication part of it not so much so ... you just have to come back and over-provision on the flexvol side ... not elagent but do-able.

I dont know what else to say I have posted the papers on how to do it, and that it does work its not really my job to convince sales of reality.

I would talk to them again if just to make sure there is no misunderstanding but the origional poster needed the information already posted

To him I hope I answered your question, look at the PDF posted to see some of your configuration options on the LUN so you can gain the most benifit from it.

Yeah, this is why we are looking to make the change to NFS ourselfs as well, some of the feature adds are nessisary for ease of management.

We are lucky and are ISCSI right now and have the network infrastructure in place for switching to another ethernet standard.

We have de-dupe in production on FC LUNS - we are gettign 60-70% de-dupe - so the NFS only restriction is not valid. I will say we have some issues with the combination of de-dupe and any misaligned NTFS partitions in VMDKs - which we are resolving slowly - but no doubt the dedupe works in FC Luns.

RParker is right, you cannot dedupe a straight FC or iSCSI LUN. But, you can dedupe a LUN inside a flexvol, and I'm guessing that's how you have it setup. However, the further problem with doing ASIS on LUN in flexvol is that the recovered space cannot be returned to flexvol itself, but only to the reserve space. In order to use that space, you have to thin prov even more, which gets dangerous after a while.

The way around all this, of course, is to use NFS, which is what NetApp wants you to do in the first place.
