vCLI does support both ESX(i) 3.5 and 4.0, there may be some changes in the script options but they
should work in general. There are a few that are 3.5 specific which will end with
35 such as (esxcfg-mpath35 and vihostupdate35). You will
not be able to manage ESX(i) 4.0 with RCLI, you'll need to make sure you're using vCLI.
I would definitely test it out before using in production but for the most part it should be fully compatible.
