Hi

I am currently setting up SRM with IBM svd and when I try to test my recovery plan I get this error in the logs

2009-06-25 13:04:51.172 'SecondarySanProvider' 2652 trivia 'testFailover' returned <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> 2 <Response> 2 <ReturnCode>0</ReturnCode> 2 </Response>

And natrually the test failes :) Anyone have a idea what can cause it? I have enabled flashcopy at the protection side

Regards

Johan

Did you include "vmware" in the host objects at both sites? This is kind of an off the wall requirement. Also do you have 2x the disk space at the recovery site? I believe flash copy needs to be licensed at both sites. Check out this thread for other gotchas:

Did you ever find a resolution to your problem? We seem to be having the same issue. When initiating a test, it fails when creating a flashcopy. After looking in the storage manager, it appears the flashcopy Vdisks and the mappings are created...but ultimately it fails.

Support said it might fail due to volumes being in a consistancy group but that isn't the case with us. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Is the SRA that you are using the 1.0.1-2 that is up on the vmware website or did you get an even newer one from IBM.

Thanks.

Can i ask if you are using two seperate SVC consoles?

We've had some issues using the same SVCC for managing both the protected and recovery sites which went away when we deployed two SVCCs - one for managing each site.

Just a thought

Can you also confirm that each SVCC is managing only a single SVC cluster.

You don't have both SVCC able to manage both sides of the cluster, do you?

If so, ensure that each SVCC can only manage a single cluster.

I just opened a software support ticket with IBM. Hopefully they'll come up with something. The SRA we're using is 1.0.1-2 from the vmware website. The release date is 4-27-09. We just started from scratch again with a clean install of SRM and the SRA's. Again, the test fails on the "prepare storage for test" step with a failure to create lun snapshots. Again the FC vdisk and mapping are created...it just fails to start the Flash copy process.

We also just tried a full run thinking maybe it is just haning up on the flashcopy process but the full failover fails as well.

Update on the SRA. The IBM SRA on the VMware website from 4/27/09 has known issues with it. In otherwords the test and failover functions don't work. Call your VMware support to get the updated version...not available for download. The one we got that works is 1.0.1.09707. Apparently this version will be released for download when the next SRM is released...so I heard.

Folks,

As I put in a previous posting, this exact same error occurs if you use a single SVC Console to manage both the protected and recovery site.

To address, you need to deploy an SVC Console to manage just a single site.

However, the problem is that this failure does not clean up after itself on the recovery site SVC cluster, and leaves the FlashCopy instance used for the TestFailover hanging around.

So you will have to login to the recovery site SVC cluster, and run the following set of commands:

1. Check if there is there a flashcopy instance currently?
svcinfo lsvdisk
svcinfo lsfcmap

1. Unpresent the flashcopy VDisk from the recovery site ESX (this might have been done by the SRA):
svctask rmvdiskhostmap

2. Stop the flashcopy between the replicated VDisk and the FlashCopy VDisk:
svctask stopfcmap

3. Remove the FlashCopy map:
svctask rmfcmap

4. Remove the FlashCopy VDisk:
svctask rmvdisk

After running these commands, and setting up the SVC consoles to manage just a single cluster instance each, I could successfully run a TestFailover on my SVC environment using the same version of SRA that you are using (Version 1.0.1-2 | Released 04/27/2009).
