If you take a look at vCenter Server Heartbeat 5.1 it supports vSphere and was released on 5/21/09: http://www.vmware.com/support/heartbeat/doc/heartbeat_55_u1_release_notes.html

We install SQL locallly, our vCenter server has enough horse power to do that.
We have never experienced any performance problems what so ever.
