My employer is moving more and more towards Ubuntu as its default linux platform. While there are currently source and RPM distributions of VMWare Tools available for linux, there is no Debian-based package. A Debian/Ubuntu compatible installation package for 3.5 Infrastructure is very much needed.

Please, all implementers of Debian/Ubuntu, this is a call to arms for a VMWare Tools .deb installable package. Compiliing source versions is cumbersome for our non-linux-guru coworkers.

It would be really nice to have a .deb package. Luckily, as linked previous, it is a relatively easy process. I have Ubuntu 8.04 as a host and vmware server 2.0 running on it and it has been rock solid. I also have a couple of Debian and Ubuntu VM's and the VM Tools are fairly easy to install.
But, as you mentioned, it would be nice for a .deb package to be included since it seems Debian-based distros are going to take over the world :)

As it turns out, the following announcement might be of help: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/185899?tstart=0

which explains how to get native installable packages (yes, '.deb' too!) for vmware tools. It seems this has been overlooked by quite a few members of these forums...Might I suggest a little bling to make it stand out more?

Hello,

Check out http://www.vmware.com/pdf/osp_install_guide.pdf as it has Ubuntu OSP packages listed as supported.
