Is anyone using Lab Manager to clone production servers and then running them in the test enviroment?

What we would really like to do is build up a test enviroment in a completely isolated location/enviroment and to use what we have in production to clone it into the test enviroment so we have exacly a mirror image of what we are running in production.. Can this be done? Am I asking too much for this product at this point? Has anyone done this?

I don't see why you can't do this. In your VIC, you can clone between clusters if the VM is powered down. Or you can use the import feature in Lab Manager to import the VM's from your production environment and Fenced them off if needed too.

Nope, not asking too much at all; this is pretty much one of the cannonical use cases for this product (and the sister product, Stage Manager).

Fenced mode becomes key for this sort of thing--you don't even have to change your networking on the clone because it's hidden off behind a NAT router, so it really does become a bitwise duplicate.

It's a whole lot easier if production can also be made to be a set of VM's encapsulated within lab manager--at the very least, "refreshing" test with a fresh duplicate of production data can be made a whole lot faster by exploiting linked clones, but importing works too.

We have done this with great sucess on a large customer! We use vmware converter to capture live Fysical hosts to VC and the import them as templates! We then stage the environments in a configuration that we make Librarys of.
The test pepole can then choose to deploy different produktion environmants :-)

It´s important that you untick the customization option for the templates!

If you operate in sweden and need help you can contact me on mail and i can help you more!! Check the www.xperta.se for more info on the companie i work for...

Does the current version of Lab Manager allow importing powered on virtual machines (production) into the Lab Manager enviroment??? Just trying to duplicate the production virtual machines into the Lab Manager as test virtual machines in fenced mode.

I have not been able to import a powered on VM into lab manager. But you should be able to creat a hot clone of your production VM and then import the clone.

As for completely isolated you can create a virtual network and connect all of your VMs to it. Then you can access lab manager from your production network while keeping the VMs in lab manager isolated. But you will have to have all of your infrastructure servers there as well. (Domain Controllers, DNS DHCP etc..)
