Trying Windows 7 RC0 released today on MSDN (32 bit version). Using ESX 3.5 Update 3 and VC update 3.
Built template vm and working. Can't deploy I don't think with VC and have sysprep customization until Update 4.
Noticed if I run sysprep (c:\windows\system32\sysprep) in the OS I get a "fatal error while trying to sysprep" message.
Anyone seen this issue or have a workaround?

My only question how exactly did you set the config for this VM, because there is no Windows 7... If you can't set it to the proper config how can you expect it to work properly...
In the past beta you could use vista as the OS.
I know...bleeding edge and sometimes you bleed!
same problem here..... any news?
I've asked Eric Sloof of ntpro.nl to try this. He has this runing on vSphere 4.
See this link: http://www.ntpro.nl/blog/archives/1101-Installing-the-Windows-7-Release-Candidate-in-a-vSphere-Virtual-Machine.html
Could I ask that we have only helpful comments in this thread. The VMExperts with the "obvious" remarks are just noise. I did start with VMware Workstation first and we are trrying for some test machines for a few IT folks on ESX..and ran into the sysprep issue which I was just looking to see if anyone else had run into.
Thanks

You asked a question, and I questioned how you set it up. Then you said that it worked as a PREVIOUS version of Beta, which was released 2 months ago. So VM Ware has had time to update their servers to support a 'vista' compatible of Windows 7. Now a new beta is released. That means that Betas change, and since it was release last week, what has changed on your ESX server to support Windows 7? Nothing.
Then you posted a link to a site that mentions vSphere, which hasn't even been released yet. So I was making a point that you are referring to a link for a product that supports a BETA product which is ALSO not been released, so future versions will support FUTURE products, but you can't expect current versions to support future OS, especially when the link YOU posted clearly demonstrated it's working on a ESX version that you don't have.
So it obviously was missed, that's why I posted it. I was trying to illustrate, that since vSphere supports it and ESX 3.5 U4 does NOT, then obviously that means there WILL be support later, but not now. So you can infer that I was being flippant, but in reality I don't think you fully comprehend what you posted, because that means that the support is there, you have to WAIT for VM ware to fully implement it.
Thanks..per the original post, I am using Update 3 of ESX 3.5 at this time. I do have the vSphere beta and have been in the program, just haven't had time to try it there yet thus I was asking Mr. Sloof.
Like we said at the beginning...bleeding edge mean you will see bood sometimes.
Actually, I am running Windows 7 64bit from ESX 3.0.2.
I have confirmed the sysprep fuction does work properly under the vSphere 4 beta code, with Windows 7 OS set to Vista for the virtual machine.
i had to stop and disable the "Windows Media player Network Sharing Service" for sysprep to run successfully under Windows 7

So VS has no Windows 7 configuration (obviously...) ? I sincerely hope that changes before production.. I plan to convert ALL Vista to Windows 7 (VISTA - LOATHE it)
