Hello -

I have a server that I would like to virtualize but it has a serial cable connected to it that hooks up to a UPS.

Is it possible to virtualize the server and redirect the com port mapping to communicate to the UPS?

We do have an ESX 3.5 u1 cluster...

Thanks,

There has been limited success in connecting a UPS device to the ESX service console via apcupsd, and possibly others. Not sure if yours will work, but it might. But, I'm not sure how successful to map that back to a serial port to a vm will be. It may work, but it will preclude the vm from vmotion/ha, if you are running it inside of a cluster.

Hello,

I have found that it is far easier to make a 'power server' that will handle the power on/off requirements for your virtual environment.

Is possibile to install apcupsd into the ESX service console.

If you will use it as a master UPS server remember to open firewall ports.

Or, you can add the serial port you your VM and install the software into the VM. But in this case you cannot move the VM.
