Sharing problem between two WM posted: Nov 17, 2008 7:45 AM

Hello,

My guest operating system is Windows XP SP2.
One of my VM's is Windows Server 2003.
The second one is Windows Server 2008.
The two OS's are in the same WG2 workgroup (no domain).

Each VM OS can ping the other one, by ip address or computer name.
For me, this means that the two computers are on the same network and each one can see the other one.

I want to share one folder in the WS 2003 WM.

The share is created.
The WS2003 and the WS2008 have the 'File and printers sharing' service installed.

On the WS2008 VM, in the Microsoft Network/WG2 workgroup, only the current computer WS2008 is visible, not the WS2003.
On the WS2003 VM, in the Microsoft Network/WG2 workgroup, there is nothing and when I try to expand it, I get the error message "WG2 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource...".
Of course, I'm logged as the admin on both computers.
And, of course when I try to connect my shared WS2003 folder inside the WS2008 system, the WS2003 is unreachable.

So, where am I wrong, and why the WG2 workroup is forbidden is the WS2003 OS (never be faced with such a behaviour) ?

Thanks.

What does "nbtstat -c" and "nbtstat -r" show? Try these commands after a "net use <drive> \ \<name of other guest>"
How does the credentials you use to logon to the other host look like?
Firewalls enabled?
Change to "Simple File Sharing" within the Explorer properties (I don't know how this is exactly called in an English Windows).

Hello,

I have a problem close to the cowabunga's one : two computers in a workgroup, each in one VM and I can't see my workgroup computers.

The first computer is a Windows Server 2003 (named WINSRV2003) where the Computer browser service, TCP/IP Netbios Helper and WINS services are started
The second computer is a Windows Server 2008 (named WINSRV2008) where all necessary services are (I presume) also started
The two computers are in the same workgroup (named WORKGROUP)
All firewalls are disabled and I have no antivirus.

I'm logged as an administrator on both computers.
I can ping from each computer to the another, by IP address OR by computer name.
I can mount a share (NET USE command) of one computer from the other computer
The NET VIEW command followed by a computer name on each computer correctly lists the current or the other computer shares

But :
On the WINSRV2008 and WINSRV2003 computers, the NET VIEW command without any parameter says : "System error 6118 has occurred. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available".
In the Windows Explorer / My Network Places / Entire network / Microsoft Windows Network of the WINSRV2008 computer, I don't see the workgroup name but of list of two computers including the VM host (Windosw XP SP3) and the WINSRV2008 computer only (not the WINSRV2003 computer)
In the Windows Explorer / My Network Places / Entire network / Microsoft Windows Network of the WINSRV2003 computer, I see the workgroup name, but, when I click on it in order to see the computer names, I get the error message "WORKGROUP is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. The list of servers for the current network is not available."

On a few Google solutions I found and tried (without any success), I have seen that the netlogon service should be started on the computers, but when I start it, it stops saying it has nothing to do (may be because I'm not in a domain).
I have no malicious softwares and the administrative shares ($shares) are all visible.

So, what is wrong on my servers ?
Why do I not see the workgroup and its computers, while the shares are visible and connectable ?

Thanks for your help.

Klaus

Which NetBIOS node type are your virtual guests? You can check this with "ipconfig /all".
