ESX Functional Webinterface (and/or linux vi) PLEASE!

Hi there,

after talking with support I was told to file a request here. I'm purposely filing a new one, as there are plenty already that appearantly go unnoted :).

For those interested, I did file a support request. Removed the personal info, it's not relevant.

1st answer (requested/informed about vi client for linux):

Hi,

thank you for your Support Request. As I work in Support I cannot comment on future releases or product development. However we here in Support have logged feature requests with our Engineering department regarding the possibility of developing a VI Client for Linux. Each time we have received a negative answer from Product Management. So for the time being there are no plans to create and VI Client for Linux.

I hope this answers your question.

Regards

After this answer I requested a (almost) fully webinterface, for most of us I think it would suffice + it would support other OS'es relatively easy as well probably (for the guest console you still need (atleast in firefox) a plugin, don't know how much OS specific code is in there). Got this answer back:

thank you for your input. Again I personally agree with you as I am writing this mail from Outlook running in a Windows Vm whose sole functions are Outlook and the VI Client.

With regards to developing the Web Interface so it is as functional as the VI Client might I recommend suggesting that through our "Feature Request" page at http://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn/suggest/product, specifically http://communities.vmware.com/thread/49061?tstart=0

Please let me know if this answers your question.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Appearantly there are atleast some different minded people in the organisation itself, which might help our cause :).

Anyways, please atleast consider the webinterface.

There looks to be hope for a native Linux Vi client yet. http://communities.vmware.com/post!reply.jspa?threadID=124744

Re: ESX Functional Webinterface (and/or linux vi) PLEASE!

Hey VMWare -- Me too. The lack of a Linux-native VIC was met with more than a few "You're kidding me.. seriously?!"'s over here. We have a substantial investment in VMWare that will likely grow in the future. This sort of thing makes us rethink deployment strategy, which is not good.

At LEAST, do one of the following:

1) Rewrite the VIC in Java instead of .NET  ..With a platform-agnostic VIC, you'll at least make both camps happy. (err..ok, maybe not HAPPY, but..heh) ... Why it was written in .NET to begin with is beyond me.

2) Provide a bootable Linux live CD that at least gets VIC fired up in X via Mono.  The fact I have to (for the moment) build an XP instance just to run the VIC to manage it is insane. We have no desire to increase our Windows footprint whatsoever.

Infact, we're moving our entire infrastructure to VMWare where I work, and away from proprietary setups (read: Windows) to Linux wherever possible...Half a million dollars worth of gear. Why make an exception for the VIC?

Re: ESX Functional Webinterface (and/or linux vi) PLEASE!

I am still looking for a native Linux client and STILL using a VM strictly for Outlook and the VIC. I would so love a native Linux client but barring that hopefully they will at least include a button on the console toolbar to execute ctrlaltdel. Since us Linux users have to run the VIC in a VM we can not use the convenient ctrlaltins and have to use the pulldown menu. Come on VMware, throw us a bone.

+1, I'd love to see even a closed-source binary.

Re: ESX Functional Webinterface (and/or linux vi) PLEASE!

I really love a Linux vSphere client to, and while we're busy, a open LDAP support besides the existence of AD?

We use Suse and OES (ok we have a W2k3 with AD, but only to support some applications) in our company.

(for te time being maybe someone succes with wine?)
