ASUS Motherboard compatbility

Hi everyone,

we are building a new VMware server that will run the latest version of ESXi. The server is not branded, which means that we will be putting together pieces to obtain the final product. That being said, I know there are issues sometimes with RAID controllers and that some systems might not be compatible.

The motherboard we will be using is ASUS M3A76-CM. The chipset is unknow to me: AMD 760G/SB710. There will be no RAID used, since only one SATA hard drive will be plugged.

So I'd like to know if the board will run ESXi just fine, or if I should change board.

Thanks a lot,

Maxime

Hello and welcome to the VMware ESXi community forums.

Your mainboard seems quite new (M3...)... the newer, the "better" chance to have problems Smiley Sad

Have a look into Dave's list of Whiteboxes and their controllers. Perhaps you choose another, older board which is on the list.

I built my box a while back and here are the parts - not sure if my chipset is still available though:

ASRock ALIVENF6G-VSTA AM2 NVidia 6100 Motherboard 1

AMD Athlon X2 BE-2400 Brisbane 2.3GHz 2

Intel Pro MT 1000 NIC 3

OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (x2) 4

PROMISE SATA300 TX4 PCI SATA II Controller Card 5

Seagate Barracuda ES.2 ST3250310NS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive 6

SeaSonic S12 II SS-330GB ATX12V 330W Power Supply 7

I tried various ways to tweak the configuration to get the onboard sata to work and in the end saved myself the time and trouble by buying the sata card.

Hi there!

Thanks to you both! I greatly appreciate your fast input on the matter. I will look into changing platforms regarding the CPU brand. We might switch to Intel in the end. We are looking for a motherboard with any correct chipset on which we can base a somewhat new processor on it (and also be supported by ESXi).

Anyways, I'll keep the thread updated as soon as I have some news, which would be pretty soon!

Thanks again, I'll be back with more information soon!

Maxime

Although this thread is probably dead, I can confirm that NIC is not working, everything else is OK for ESXi 4.0.
