Let's use this topic to list VMWare related jobs that might be available for PAVMUG members. Also, if you're a PAVMUG member looking for a job, you can post your contact information here (remember that your boss may belong to PAVMUG also).

This is an interesting (yet tricky) thread!

Not that I have been actively looking for different employment, but I have reviewed CareerBuilder, Monster, etc. seeing what career changes are available out there for VCPs, or which companies are looking for people with VMware experience. But, as you may not be surprised to find out, there weren't any listed... anywhere.

So, how are companies filling their VMware need? Are they using temporary agencies (or consultants) that can be dismissed once their contract is complete? Are they hiring experienced Software Engineers with VMware experience? Hardware Engineers? IT Professionals? Are there any jobs available to VCPs/people with VMware experience?

Too be totally honest, I started looking for a job for my wife. She is a recent college graduate (WCU, BA in Graphic Design) and is having a hard time finding work in the Philadelphia area. Most companies that want GDs are looking for experienced (5 years or more) people, which she is obviously does not have at the moment. However, it did lead me to look for VMware-related opportunities for myself. After all, if you don't know what your value is, how can you know if you are under-paid/valued? ;)

It seems to me that VMware, although a large facet of the virtualization/consolidation game, is not as much of a household word as, say, Microsoft. And I would think that as a recruiter it would be more difficult to post an opening solely looking for VMware-specific skill sets. It also seems that people in the know are more likely to understand what having a VCP on staff is worth to a company, but for the general masses: MCP > VCP. Or at least with respect to new employment.

Do you (or anyone else) agree?

(As a side note, I DO like the work that I am doing right now with the exception of wanting more money for it. But, then, don't we all. :) )

Being on the consulting side I have to say your time is coming. At most of the large server consolidation projects I have been involved with they are augmenting staff with consulting to begin with. Basically get the product in house, get it running, documented, train the staff and then hire some experts to tweak it. Most of the time I see people looking to hire 1 - 2 Sr. Network Engineers after a project I am involved in. This is to handle the increased # of servers they will have long term and to manage ESX.

I actually talked to VMware the other week about working for them. They need an engineer in this area. The posting said 50% travel and when they called me the guy said it's actually 100% travel. I have 2 little kids, and that much travel is out of the question for me.

Incidentally, the gentleman I talked to out in CA said he usually only handles the west coast and that he would check to see what the travel was and get back to me... he never did...even after I reminded him with an email. Nice way to treat people...

Where do they go to hire them? Monster? Careerbuilder? Headerhunters? Most of the positions I occasionally see are VMware as an added plus.

Kix - you must be psychic.

As for me, I have since left Unisys and am doing consulting (VAC/VCP) subcontracting for VMware, but traveling heavily. It confirmed that I was underpaid there (51% more base pay in the switch). Not that I would leave my current company, they rock in comparison, but I am an still transitioning and we are looking to start a family soon. Not really plausible when I am in NYC one week, Arizona the next, CA after that, and back to the east coast.

So, the pay is great, opportunities abound, and I am finally getting out of debt, but the time away from family is a harsh reality. Law of averages, I guess. :)

PS: Kix, you're the first one on here to get that reference. Good Job! Or should I say, "Well read!" ;)

PPS: VMware contacted me for the local position, too, but I was already "retained." I took it as an ego boost and assumed that I must be on a right path. ;)
