Suddenly, my Blackberry Storm when attached via USB to Blackberry's Desktop Manager program in WinXP Pro SP3 via VM Fusion 2.0.2 through Mac Pro (OSX 10.5.6) no longer is recognized because, I believe, the Mac Pro or VM Fusion doesn't allow my Blackberry to connect. On my Mac Pro, connecting Blackberry Storm shows up on desktop and in Finder via USB connection. It also appears in the Settings/ USB connected devices but without a checkmark next to the device. There are a total of 7 devices within settings for USB (including the Blackberry) and all have checkmarks next to each device but the Blackberry. Attempts to check mark it fail. Also icons in lower right corner (the other way to connect devices) are connected; and when I click on the icon for USB for Connect to RIM Blackberry, that fails too. This has never been a problem to get VM Fusion to recognize the Blackberry via USB connection. Can't find the cause. This problem started two days ago. Reinstalled Desktop Manager, reinstalled 2.0.1. same problem. Then reinstalled 2.0.2 and same problem persisted. Connected Blackberry to a Dell Laptop which recognized the device immediately. Installed Blackberry's Desktop Manager on the laptop Win XP SP3 (also) and the Desktop Manager recognized the Storm by showing the pin # and allowing the utility to function. The problem does not seem to be with the Blackberry Storm or with the Mac Pro operating system. Only within VM Fusion after Windows XP boots up. Anyone else experiencing an inability to a specific device via to USB within Fusion?
Best,
REShaman

Can you get a USB log as described in Information Gathering for VMware Fusion?

Attachments safe to open.

Thank you so much Etung. BTW: I have seen your posts before in researching
other issues within the tombs of the forums.
Hoping I have followed your instructions accurately and provide you with the
information in the logs that might reveal the cause of this sudden loss of
USB connectivity for my RIM Blackberry Storm via USB which has always worked
flawlessly.
I am indebted to you for any solution you may discover. I am way out of my
level of competence and I am learning a lot from "when it goes wrong".
Best,
Richard

A couple of questions, and a request...

First: have you tried using the Storm with fewer USB devices attached? Are the devices all 2.0, or a mix of 1 and 2?

Next, please check Information Gathering for VMware Fusion, particularly the section "Enable USB debugging". The log files that result from that will provide us with much more USB log info.

Thanks!

Kevin

Kevin,
The USB devices including my Blackberry Storm are all 2.0. Please understand
that my Blackberry has been connected intermittently since December 2008.
Your post in the thread mentioned below is below the log files I posted.
Aren't those log files available to you?
Additionally, you should know the following. I disconnected all the USB
devices and only connected the Blackberry. It did not cure the problem. And
more importantly, I booted up into Boot Camp (stand alone). Connected my
Blackberry Storm and Windows recognized it immediately. Disconnected the
Storm, installed Blackberry's Desktop Manager and reconnected the Storm. DM
recognized the blackberry Storm connected via USB immediately. And allowed
me to interact with my Storm. It is only when I am booted up in Windows in
the Boot Camp Partition in VM Fusion that Windows no longer finds the Storm
via USB or DM is connected with the Storm, whether Storm is connected via
USB alone or with 6 other devices.
Does this information help you? Can you access the logs in my post above
your post. They were created using the correct instructions for analyzing
USB connections in VM Fusion.
Best,
Richard

Thanks, Richard - I hadn't checked that the USB logging info was turned on. I'm sending the info off to our engineers; they may ask me to contact you for more info, or may do so directly themselves.

I had problems connecting my Blackberry Bold after upgrading to
version 2.0.2. I downgraded to 2.0.1 and everything worked again.

That's a good thought. I did that as well, but for my experience, it did not
cure the problem. Thank you for the suggestion.

Kevin,
I forgot to mention that I downgraded to 2.0.1 without a cure. Reinstalled
2.0.2. Also forgot to mention that I even removed one of the Microsoft
updates (Java kill bit (?)). I would have _issed on a spark plug if I
thought it would have made a difference. Another poster emailed me to say
his downgrade to 2.0.1 worked to reconnect his Blackberry Bold. Just trying
to offer help.
Best,
Richard

Richard - (and everyone else) - thanks for all the input. I opened a bug on this earlier today. It's gonna be looked at; it's too early to say much else.

Thank you so much, Kevin. It's so interesting to be part of a discovery in
expanding the use of Fusion. Wishing you and all others involved good
fortune in sorting this out. I am sure we'll all benefit.
Best,
Richard

I had this problem as well. If you are running Missing Sync, it might be hijacking your USB connection, even if it's not running. Open up Activity Monitor and kill any Missing Sync processes that might be running. I had 2, stopped them both and I was again able to connect my Storm to VM.

dbwilldo,
Kudos to you! :)
I appreciate your thoughtful suggestion and followed the steps you outlined. You are precisely correct. After going into Activity Monitor (purposefully repeating the steps I took), I discovered two Missing Sync processes which I quit/killed. Thereafter immediately booted Fusion. Waited for every program to load and when the system tray was full with Desk Manager up and running, I connected my Storm via USB and in a moment or two, there was my pin number with access to my BlackBerry Storm via USB with Desk Manager. Thank you so much for your expert advice. It never occurred to me that Missing Sync which I find very useful on the Mac side would have such a negative impact on the Windows side. I had been working around this problem by booting up inside Boot Camp partition which allowed the USB connection and was not adversely affected by Missing Sync processes running on the Mac side.
Hoping that those at VM Fusion who have sought to help me with this are following this thread and recognizing what dbwilldo has revealed and how successful his good advice has been for me. If I have inconvenienced anyone at VM Fusion through my ignorance, please accept my apologies. And please reward dbwilldo for the excellent solution.
With much gratitude and appreciation,
Richard
