Dell 1600sc PSOD

Hi Everyone,

I am new to ESXi server and am trying to get a test environment up and running. I have got a Dell PowerEdge 1600sc to use for this as I saw on this thread that it was working with ESXi http://communities.vmware.com/thread/2292

The server has 2 x Xeon processors, 768Mb (i will up this if I get it to boot ) memory, 2 x 36Gb SCSI (no raid) on the LSI controller. I have updated the BIOS to the latest version A12.

When I try to boot ESXi I get a PSOD with the error "Not_implemented /build/mts/release/bora-123629/bora/vmkernel/sched/sched.c:5057"

The only other posts I found with this overcame it with BIOS updates but this has not worked for me.

Any help will be appreciated.

You'll need at least 1 GB of memory. I had the same issue with ESXi in a VM that had 768 MB and it was fixed by increasing the memory to 1 GB.

Hello,

I think it is a hardware compatability problem. ESXi seems not to be supported on your platform. I attached the PowerEdge servers that can be working with ESXi.

Best Regards,

Hi Suprauche,

Thanks for answering.

I realise this is not on the HCL but as this is a test lab box for ESXi I am just loking for whitebox compatabillity and not production support. The previous poster aknosp had posted "[You can run ESX Server on this box without an issue; however, it will not be supported by VMware|t-2292]."

This is all I am looking for and would be really grateful if someone could help me overcome this error.

I have been using the 1600SC as a test platform without any problems (ESX3i) - You mentioned 768MB RAM, my test platform is using 4GB. Your PSOD may be a RAM issue, try swapping out your RAM and then install again.

I've ordered in some more memory and will let you know how it goes when it arrives.

Thanks,

Stuart

Hey Stuart,

Have you made any progress on this? I was considering buying a used 1600SC.

Thanks,

Dan

I have increased the amount of physical memory in this host and ESX now boots without error. It did not need a reinstall and everything seems to be working perfectly.

Thanks everyone that helped with this.
