ESXi U3 on Dell Precision 360

Good Day,

I am attempting to install ESXi on the above-mentioned Dell. All PCI ids are compatible except for the Intel 82801EB SMBus controller which has an id of 24d3 (it could have been 24d4, I shut down in frustration before posting).

Is there a work-around for this without editing simple.map?

Your assistance greatly appreciated.

P.S. Has anyone got ESXi working on an HP/Compaq Proliant ML310 G1?

Check the ESX/ESXi whitebox sites - www.vm-help.com is a good one.

Thank you nick

I have visited those sites on several occasions trying to build ESXi test /POC boxes and have successfully managed to build up a few.

The IDE/SATA work-arounds have also been of immense help in the past.

My query revolves around a Dell system that to all extents will run Esxi without a problem but I am getting that ol' "nowhere to install to" error as I am using an 80GB IDE harddrive. I have identified the only incompatibility as being the above-mentioned SMBus controller and was hoping there was a solution to this.

Many thanks.

You cannot install to an IDE hard drive from the ESXi installer - editing the simple.map file won't even help you on this. You need a SCSI/SAS drive or a SATA disk running in native mode for the install to work. If you want to use this Dell machine for ESXi you might seriously consider going and grabbing a couple of USB thumb drives and using those to boot.

All due respect but I'm currently running ESXi on an IBM Thinkcentre P4 3Ghz / 1GB RAM / 40GB IDE Hdd. installed using http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/ESXi_install_to_IDE_drive/ESXi_install_to_IDE_drive.php.

so the Dell should be able to handle it

Thank you once again
