PSOD Exception type 14 on HP Proliant ML115 G1

Hi there.

I gave up trying to install ESXi from the CD because of the need to edit sava_nv.xml and instead imaged a USB stick.

My HP Proliant ML115 G1 will boot the hypervisor, but after about 2 minutes, it will crash with a purple screen of death, before i even have a chance to try and do anything.

I haven't got a clue what the screen means. I've changed the RAM and it's still coming up, so here's a picture of the PSOD.

Does this mean anything to anyone?

Welcome to the VMware Community forums. The sfcbd process that is mentioned in the exception error (line 2 of your image) is part of the CIM server in ESXi which is used for monitoring the health of your hardware. Are you using the HP specific image to create your USB stick? It has HP specific drivers for the CIM server that might eliminate the error. Otherwise it might be possible to boot to with a linux live CD and modify /etc/esx.conf to disable the CIM server.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your response. I was pretty certain that I'd used the HP image, but to be sure I checked ISOs and reimaged the USB stick. Still giving me the purple screen.

Downloading Knoppix ISO at the moment.

Hi Dave,

Latest update - I did some more reading and wasn't 100% sure that ML115 G1 properly suppored ESXi because there's nothing about virtualisation or VT in the BIOS.

I was going to have to buy more hardware anyway, so I bought a ML115 G5 Quad core Opteron to give that a go (I had read that this particular SKU was 1. cheap and 2. worked with ESXi, see techhead.)

I tried the HP ESXi image on a USB stick with this server and same PSOD type 14 error.

Since ESXi clearly worked on this model, according to techhead.co.uk, the problem was either with the USB stick or with the image.

I re-imaged the USB stick with the non-HP ESXi image and it's not crashing out any more.

Solution: Don't use the HP Insight image, use the regular ESXi image.

Thanks for your time anyway. The ML115 G1 is going to be turned into an OpenFiler box.
