Need a PAUSE feature like in Parallels - doesn't save the state of the guest but simply freezes it and consumes minimal CPU.

I've read the comments on Windows Hibernate and Standby. These features don't always work on a real PC and can't be depended on. Plus I'm looking for something faster acting. We need a VMware solution.

Today is a perfect example of why I need to pause a VM. I'm running XP and have just finished a basic installation of Ubuntu that's now installing 120 of the OS updates it just downloaded. Performance of my entire machine has gone to hell while the disk I/O of this VM overwhelms the MBP's disk subsystem. My customer comes over to discuss business and the Mac is struggling to switch me back to my Windows XP and once it finally does, the mouse pointer can't keep up. I finally switch back to Ubuntu, select Suspend and the customer and I wait for it happen...

Ive had times when I would have killed for this option too. That whole "stop for a second, but I will be back" because you're doing something, the phone rings.. or, such

Hi etung,

Thanks so much for the tip! I was very confused as to why "Suspend Guest" was greyed out. I expect only rarely to boot into Windows Vista natively, and in any event will have a backup image of the entire Boot Camp partition available, so enabling this feature will be very helpful to me (presuming that I can find the right option in the VMX file).

If VMware ever wanted to add a supported feature to suspend the Boot Camp VM, here's how it could be done:
  • I'm sure there's something VMware Tools could do to render the partition non-bootable before actually suspending.
  • If the user attempted to boot natively, from a suspended VM, this "security patch" could display text instructions to reboot into Mac OS X and resume-then-shut-down the suspended Boot Camp VM before restarting into Windows.

Cheers,

Miles
