Enable FTP

Hi all,

In vi /etc/inetd.conf is possible to enable the ftp service or at least uncomment the #.

Scp works ok but I am just curious if someone has enabled and configure ftp in ESXi. If so...how ?

Yes you can enable FTP by un-commenting the FTP line in inetd.conf ..... But why would you do this? You would be opening a security hole which SHH (and therefore SFTP) was designed to fix. FTP sends everything in plain text including passwords and is therefore vulnerable.

I agree, but if separated on a management network, it could be used to overcome the CPU-stressing overhead of scp.

I don't think ESX 3.x even has an FTP deamon, you'd need to install one. There are valid reasons like a streaming FTP disk dump for cloning unsupported OS's.

The file for the FTP entry in inetd.conf refers to does not exist on ESXi so one would have to compile a copy for ESXi.
