I can't install esx3i U2 on a HP ML150 G5

Hi all,

I am trying to install ESX3i free version on a HP ProLiant ML150 G5 without luck. Every time that I try to install, installer returns this error:

cpu1:1025)Heartbeat: 470: PCPU 0 didn't have a heartbeat for 65 seconds. may be locked up.

cpu0:1139)NMI: 1625: Faulting eip:esp

I know that ML150 G% is not on HCL list, but ESX3.5 works ok on this server and the vmkernel (hypervisor)is the same right?? Somebody knows how can I fix this?? My BIOS firmware on this server is up to date ...

You might want to try a PXE install - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/ESXi_PXE_install.html

Good news. I tried the install from another machine and it worked. So there must have been something definitely wrong with my Virtual Media applet. Guess not eveyone can do virtual devices properly Smiley Happy . In any case there are a few things I did.

I powered off the server and then tried Windows 2008 to see what it would do. It came up an error saying some communciation error with the CDROM or removable disk. So then I logged on to another machine and the ESX install went through .

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

Regards

One more thing, why can't I create new threads ? I can only reply to posts ???

Hi all

I have a success in the process to install vmware esxi in a proliant HP ML 150 G5. You need to do the following in the bios settings:

Activate the Enhanced Mode in SATA1 and SATA2 in advanced tab/Hard Disk Configuration

Activate Intel Virtualization Technology in Advance/CPU configuration

Enabled KB/MS OS IRQ in Advanced Tab.

Whit this settings u can install VMware ESXi in a SATA2 Hard Disk. (Tested with Samsung sata2 160gb)

Hi!

The activation of the parametre KB / MS bone IRQ is magic. Installation takes place in the perfection and ESXi is stable for four days. (before touching KB/MS parameter i had a PSOD every 31 minutes and ESXi didn't work during elapsed time)

In the session <F12> I see a lot off the following message " cpu0: on 1814) Warning: UserSocketInet: 588: waiters list not empty ", cpu1, 2 and 3 are also concerned by the same message.

Have you an idea of what it can mean?

cheers

Activate the Enhanced Mode in SATA1 and SATA2 in advanced tab/Hard Disk Configuration

So does this mean that ESXi cannot be installed when the ML 150 G5 is configured to use RAID with the HP Embedded SATA RAID Controller?

The driver for the nVidia MCP 55 (I believe that's the controller for the 150 G5) does not support RAID functionality.

I've successfully installed ESXi on my ML150 and had it running all of Friday. Came back this morning and the server rebooted (I suspect a power outage). Now it won't boot. It just sits there after all the POST tests (which all pass). Black screen, cursor flashing, nothing. I tried doing a repair which it said was successful, but still nothing. Has anyone else seen anything like this?

Yes...

I have the same issue when i delete the parameters in bios settings, or when i change the parameters with a ESXi installed.

Try booting with usb flash memory with ESXi installed on it. I read in a post in this site the instructions to follow. Reset to defaults values in your bios, reconfigure the bios with me magical parameters and start with the usb memory, and see if boot.

If the system boot, try with the Hard Drive.

Got it to boot again. Here is the summary of my findings.

First, I tried the suggestion to boot from Flash Drive and that worked. It was painfully slow, but it booted and seemed to have crashed/hanged at first. So i rebooted and made the BIOS changes it and worked with the BIOS modifications. After this I tried installing to the hard drive again. Install succeeded but didn't boot. I decided to manually clean the hard drive and try again. I popped in my Ubuntu live CD and booted the machine and used the Partition tool to clear both Hard Drives. I should point out that my ML 150 has two 160GB SATA drives.

After cleaning off the partitions I installed again and again it failed to boot. I rebooted into Ubuntu using my live cd and started poking around again. It was at this point I noticed something odd. When I did the installs I always selected the first hard drive from the list that ESXi gives me (Hard Disk 0). However, the partition manager in Ubuntu reported that the Hypervisor was installed on the second hard drive (/dev/sdb), while the first hard drive (/dev/sda) was reported as empty. With this info I decided to clean both drive again, and then install on the second drive instead. It worked! My guess is that ESXi is somehow swapping the hard drives' logical order - hence the boot failure since the BIOS can't find a boot loader. I'll continue to test the new install and see if it holds up.

The one part of this puzzle that is a mystery is how the system broke in the first place since it was working last week.

Would you have a green HP USB flash drive. If so, it may be defective. http://communities.vmware.com/click.jspa?searchID=4682647&objectType=2&objectID=1111418

Thanks a lot Dave. I'm going to change my USB flash drives.

I post a comment when done.
