A Bunch of Useful SRM Links

Like me you have probably found finding the storage vendors docs on SRM sometimes tricky to find. So I have been collecting and collating them...

Thanks to Lee Dilworth (Smoggy?) on the forums for handing me the EMC ones:

IF anyone here finds a doc which have found useful, please post it here:

Hi Mike, yes I am Smoggy aka Lee Dilworth @ vmware

For anyone reading this thinking what are these two going on about a "smoggy" is a slang expression for anyone who lives/is from the town of Middlesbrough in the UK. That is my birthplace and old hometown. I know for a fact Mr Laverick eminates from a town only a stones through from Middlesbrough so Mike i think you almost fall under the same smog cloud?

Re: A Bunch of Useful SRM Links

Hi Mike,

First  a generic remark: although I do have a valid EMC PowerLink account,

I am not able to directly withdrow documents from the links you supply

However it's not a big deal, as we can search in PowerLink with your supplied information like document numbers to find them

As I'm working through my SRM Plan, Design & Build engagement with EMC storage,

I would like to recommend the following storage related material that I collected (besides your usefull links) thus far:

Using EMC Symmetrix Storage in VMware Virtual Infrastructure Environments - Extended overview of VMware VI & Symmetrix, also very usefull for storage experts managing VI environments

Document ID:  H2529

H2529_vmware_esx_svr_w_symmetrix_wp_ldv.pdf

VMware Site Recovery Manager with EMC Symmetrix DMX Series and SRDF - Implementation Guide

Document ID:  H5767

h5767-vmware-srm-symmetrix-dmx-series-srdf-implementation-guide.pdf

EMC SRDF Adapter for VMware Site Recovery Manager Version 1.0.1 - Release Notes

Document ID:  300-007-081

300-007-081_a03.pdf

EMC Solutions Enabler  version 6.5 Installation Guide - For those working with Symmetrix, like DMX-4,

Needed in conjunction with the SRA

Document ID:  300-002-289

300-002-289_a05_elccnt_0.pdf

EMC Solutions Enabler Symmetrix SRDF Family CLI version 6.5 - Connected to previous document

Document ID:  300-000-877

300-000-877_a10_elccnt_o.pdf

Re: A Bunch of Useful SRM Links

Hi

I am writing this as an EMC employee

The way PowerLink typically works is that the URL to many documents embeds a portion of the user's specific credentials in the link and hence the link that works for you will not often work for anyone else

A better solution may be to quote the document number as suggested and as well as the name and ideally also provide the 'document location'.  See below a typical search result

Release Notes: Celerra VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager Failback Plug-in\pdf(0.2 MB)

These Release Notes cover the EMC Celerra VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager Failback Plug-in, which is a supplemental software package for the VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM).

March 17, 2009 \

English \

Content Type: Support: Product Documentation \

Document Location\ \

Confidentiality\

|

The Document location is a link below the document title and details in the search pane. This provides a staged tree breakdown to the location of  the document as below

Home > Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > Hardware/Platforms Documentation > Celerra Network Server > Release Notes

This tends to be more helpful and can lead you to a direcyory or object level within PowerLink where you can define alerts to be notified of future document releases

Re: A Bunch of Useful SRM Links

Hi Mike

There is an awareness within EMC around the lack of transparency in terms of pieces posted on the internal EMC PowerLink and the subset of those documents - such as those with a public tag and more pertinent to us with VMware relevance that should be also accessible from EMC.com.

If you encounter documents that are available from PowerLink and not similarly available from EMC.com could you please send me an email with the document number and I will see about getting it posted to EMC.com if eligilble

Document H2529 is avialable from

http://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/solution-overview/h2529-vmware-esx-svr-w-symmetrix-wp-ldv.pdf

Document H5767 is avialable from

http://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/technical-documentation/h5767-vmware-srm-symmetrix-dmx-series-srdf-implementation-guide.pdf

Document H4409 is available from

http://www.emc.com/collateral/software/solution-overview/h4409-recoverpt-srm-so.pdf

Some of the docuiments such as those with the 300-007-081 style code may be PowerLink specific for customer / partner consumption as they pertain to the specifics of actually implementing an EMC solution as opposed to articulating an EMC approach to a generic business issue such as disaster recovery  - but I will check

Many thanks

Re: A Bunch of Useful SRM Links

Hello,

Why HP.COM not caring about their Customers whose using HP MSA SAN Storage 1000 or 2000 and release SRA for those Storage? They are mainly focusing on EVA 4000 and 8000, but why they are releasing a tons of WhitePapers of Best Practice implementation HP MSA1000 with VMware and HP MSA 2000 with VMware, ect ect ect. But when it comes to an SRA to be integrated with SRM. The Answer is Sorry.

I know customers who implemented VMware using thier existing MSA 1000 and 2000 and they want to go for SRM, but unfortunately they cannot becuase the SRA is not available yet for this kind of SAN Storage I'm one of those customers who doesn't want to by a new SAN Straoge, and I want to utilize the MSA SAN Storage at our DR Site, but HP.COM doesn't give VMware.com the chance gain more money by allowing the customers who's using MSA SAN Storage to by VMware SRM product.

Re: A Bunch of Useful SRM Links

Some valuable HP whitepapers and best practices re SRM I was missing on this community site:

HP EVA and vSphere SRM best practices whitepaper:

http://h20195.www2.hp.com/V2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=4AA2-8848ENW.pdf

or:

http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/partners/hp/hp_EVA_vmware_SRM-4AA2-8848ENW.pdf

Several SRM related links that lead to information on several storage related SRA's:
