Hello,
I am trying to use ESXi (Integrated HP Version on USB Key) on a DL380 G5.
We are running HP SIM 5.2 SP1 and the ESXi version is the ESXi 3.5 Update 1 with HP Providers.
We have configured WBEM on the HP Sim server and it discovers the server just fine.
When I click on Health Status in HP Sim (or look at status in Virtual Center), it shows me the status for Fans/Memory/Power/Processors (see attached) but nothing for disk/storage. (ie, I can pull a power supply and status will become degraded)
Is this something I have misconfigured? or do the HP Provided CIM providers in ESXi fail to monitor disk as a 'feature'.
Thanks!
Aaron
I hope someone will answer this as I am also interested in this matter. I know that Dell is exposing the storage under Health Status in VC but HP not.
I do not have HP SIM running yet but, from what you're saying, this info is missing also there.
BTW, did you patched the firmware on the usb stick with the update available from vmware ? I did this and I have some concerns that the original version from HP was overwritten and the SIM providers are gone.
Do you have local disk as well or booting from san?

I haven't yet tried to install the firmware from VMWare as I was under the impression that we needed to use the updates that HP gives. They will apparently be coming on Firmware Update CD's in the future from HP.
And you are correct, I can see the exact same info from HP SIM as VC, no more, no less..
This is the answer I've got from HP which confirms that vmware update manager doesn't overwrite their oem stuff:

Q. How are future updates to integrated VMware ESX Server 3i handled??
A. Future updates to HP integrated VMware ESX Server 3i can be made using the same tool used to update ProLiant system firmware, HP Smart Update Manager. Consolidating integrated ESX Server 3i and ProLiant firmware updates within HP Smart Update Manager simplifies time consuming lifecycle management. Customers can also use VMware Update Manager to update the HP image on the USB key. VUM will detect that the host has an OEM image, and will retain that image across an upgrade

Still, it is not clear for me how to get storage status from HP SIM or VC.
Nice to know...
FYI: I also posted this question to the HP Sim forum here. I'm also trying to get ahold of an HP Rep that might be able to get us more information.

The current HP CIM providers do not have the storage management capability. It is known and being worked for a future release.
A clarification here, you can and should use the VMware updates (if you chose to do so). They will be able to handle the updating of both the VMware and the OEM code segments.
Yep! I also just confirmed this from our VMWare Rep. Guess we will have to shelf ESXi for now... ![]()
What specific functionality would you want for the local disk? Just
monitoring health or something more?
-dilpreet
Basically, if a local disk array is degraded, I want to be notified before a second drive fails so we can replace the drive proactively.
The other things that aren't monitored that are a problem are NICS and HBAs
If a teamed nic fails, I want to know so I can fix it before a second nic fails, same with HBSs
This is a HUGE problem and basically prevents us using 3i for more than testing at this point...

NOTE: I am using licensed ESX 3.5 (not Installable).
I need this disk monitoring functionality as well. In the past I had to setup an HP SIM VM and have it monitor the the HP ESX HW for warnings or failures. When I saw the Health Status section on the Host I thought my HP SIM VM days were through. Unfortunately, the local disk monitoring is the most critical of all the alerts, as I do not want to find out that I have had a degraded disk or that I have kicked over to an online spare, when another disk goes and my machine goes down.

For standard ESX 3.5 you should be able to use the agents provided by
HP to get this functionality.
You can....by installing an HP SIM server.....which is exactly what I do not want to do.

How would you want this to work in the COS then? CIM provider?
